Chelsea Nguyen recently graduated from Northern with her master's degree in music education. To her, the MME program was an indispensable part of her training as a music educator:
"The Master of Music Education program went above and beyond what I expected from it. The program changed the way I view music education and how I teach my students. The program not only provided me with opportunities to practice new pedagogies, but to learn from my amazing classmates from all around the world. This program is unique. Lastly, this program has renewed my excitement and increased my confidence in being a music educator."

In 1953, Northern State University began offering graduate degrees in education. By our count, this means that we are turning 70 years old this year! Our graduate programs have come a long way since 1953, now including several specialized education tracks and business MS degree options. Here's to 70 more years!
Brooke L Palleschi graduated from NSU in the Spring with her MSEd in Teaching and Learning. She is nothing but grateful to have completed her master's education at Northern:
"Northern State University's Master of Teaching and Learning program has not only helped me excel in the classroom as a high school English teacher but has prepared me for my new position as a continuous school improvement instructional coach. Throughout the program, I gained experience working and deciphering data resulting in positive changes in student achievement in my classroom. Additionally, this program allowed me to gain more confidence in working with students with special needs, ensuring that adaptations and modifications were adequately implemented and providing the tools to successfully work with our special education team. Lastly, I have the knowledge and the skills to evaluate curriculum and provide insight into whether the curriculum meets our school district's needs. I gained valuable knowledge and experience throughout my master's program at Northern State University."

CarLee Mechels will graduate this summer with her MSEd in Sports Performance and Leadership. She shares some of her favorite aspects of the program:
"Northern’s Sport Leadership Program was unlike anything I have experienced before. The small class sizes helped me expand my knowledge and see the different perspectives there are in sports. I hope to use the knowledge I gained in my future careers and spread that to different people I meet along the way! Go Wolves!"

At the 2023 Spring Commencement ceremony, we had six students graduate with their MSEd in counseling. Amy Mielke was one of these students, specializing in mental health counseling. Read about her experience below:
"Northern's graduate program for Mental Health Counseling was great. The professors were really supportive throughout the whole program! Not only did we gain education for the field, but I learned a lot about myself as well!"

“Staying close to home and attending Northern State University was the right choice for me as a first-time freshman. Obtaining my graduate degree online through NSU as a full-time teacher and mother of two was also the right decision for me. The online courses have clear and consistent weekly expectations, making it easy to plan accordingly. The information within the courses applies directly to what I am doing as an educator, and I have been able to make positive changes to my instruction, communication and behavior management. I have been challenged to utilize new resources and reflect on the effectiveness of my teaching strategies. I tell my husband all the time that these courses are making me a better teacher. I am now nearly two classes away from completing my Master of Science in Education in Teaching and Learning. Go Wolves!” - Madison Dee Aguirre, MSEd Teaching and Learning Candidate

"There are numerous things about being in this program that I could brag about. I would have to say the best thing about being in this program would be the help that the professors have provided me. Specifically, Dr. Wold and Dr. Vogel have helped me throughout the entire process, and I do not know if it would have gone as smoothly as it did without them. I would highly recommend the Accelerated Special Education Graduate program that Northern State has to offer, as it has helped me to become the best teacher I can be. I will always be thankful for the opportunities that Northern gave me and will forever be grateful." ~ Robert Coyle III, MSEd Special Education Candidate

Current graduate student Garret Thompson recently presented at the COSMA conference on the Effect of Sports Retirement on Division II Athletes.
Garret explains what this opporutnity and many others at Northern have meant to him, "The graduate programs have helped me grow my knowledge and skills in higher education. I originally came to Northern to wrestle and get my undergraduate degree. However, NSU has become a place that both my fiance and I call home. Northern is a great university that values both its students and staff. It has helped me build connections that I hope to continually use in my professional career. I am forever thankful for this university and the opportunities it has given me!"

“Northern State University propelled me on a leadership journey that instilled in me that people are your most valuable asset.
The positive relationships I established have stood the test of time, and I am forever grateful for my NSU experience and masters degree.”

"Being in the first cohort of the NSU MME was a valuable experience being able to professionally collaborate with other music educators from around the Upper Midwest. The classwork and discussions were reflective of the work we have done and of the NEW that we have learned. Working on my MME through NSU presented an outstanding opportunity to stretch my educational philosophies and teaching practices. It allowed me to develop a more open-minded approach to how I instruct the bands I have the privilege of directing."

"I was in the first class that graduated from the Masters of Accounting Analytics program in 2021. I attended Northern State University for my undergraduate degree in accounting and graduated in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic.
I chose to return home to Illinois and be with family but still wanted to attend the new Master of Accounting Analytics program. Luckily, Northern offered an online option for the Master’s program and I was able to continue to grow my relationships with professors I had established in my undergraduate studies.
The Master of Accounting Analytics program has top tier curriculum that has aided me on a daily basis in public accounting. The program advanced my knowledge of the software used in many businesses today and developed a deeper understanding of formal financial presentations. Accounting analytics are becoming an increasingly vital operation in the business world and I would recommend anyone in the finance/accounting field to enroll in this program. I am forever grateful for my time at Northern. Go Wolves!"

"My experience has been great! The knowledge I gained from classes applies to my work as an audit associate. The community enthusiasm I developed from being involved in campus activities prepared me to have healthy interactions with coworkers and clients. Lastly, I had adequate experience to be helpful to the company I am working for and the team I work with to achieve our goals. As a result, my graduate study at NSU provided me with professional skills to find satisfaction in my career, the company I work for, and the clients we serve."
