Today, news must be shared of the passing of Donald P. Chauvin, 2017 Abbeville High School Athletic Hall of Fame Honorary Inductee. On behalf of the Chauvin Family, we wanted to personally address all of those in attendance Thursday evening at Magdalen Place, for the 2021 Annual Hall of Fame Banquet which was abruptly cut short after he collapsed during the ceremony. The night was special for him as always! Those in attendance came to enjoy fellowship while honoring those who were to be recognized. Unfortunately, the night did not go as planned and I felt compelled to send a message to all who came to the event which ended so suddenly and unfinished. His passing is heartbreaking for all who knew him. He was doing exactly what he wanted to do, in a place he loved, with people he genuinely cared about and cherished! He would not want the evening to be about him but unfortunately it was. He gave unselfishly to his High School and his community with passion and a talented skillset that yielded successful accomplishment in all endeavors for many years.

His opportunity to introduce 2021 Honorary Hall of Fame Inductee, Mrs. Barbara Gale LeMaire, was greatly anticipated and extremely important to him. He looked forward to being on the 50yd line with her on Friday night and arrangements were in place to insure he could do just that! He was so proud for her and worked hard to keep his health in preparation for this week’s festivities so he could be a part of it all. We were so proud to see him on stage at the banquet, sharing stories, getting laughs, and honoring Mrs. Barbara, who he loved dearly! He was right where he wanted to be, doing exactly what he loved. This is comforting to our family.

It is our hope that the Athletic Hall of Fame will find a way to make up for the shortfalls of the evening. I know the legacy of Donald P Chauvin will live on and the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame will forever be his home. He will surely be missed but not forgotten.

Thank you all for loving our pops and it is an honor to be a part of this wonderful community!

Sincerely,
Janet Chauvin, Todd Chauvin, Pamela C Trahan, Kimberly C Etie’ & Clayton Chauvin.

🏆 Introducing AHS Athletic Hall of Fame Honorary Inductee
Mrs. Barbara Gayle LeMaire
Bio Summary
• Barbara Gayle moved to Abbeville in 1956 as a freshman and attended all four years of high school at Abbeville High, graduating in 1960.
• She was very active in numerous organizations but her fondest memories are that of being selected as a Wildcat Cheerleader.
• In 1974 her family was very involved in the AHS Boosters Club and proudly supported all sports activities at Abbeville High where both her and her children attended and graduated.
• In 1977 she lead a massive cleaning and restoration project at Wildcat stadium, painting the stadium grey and the stairways red, which resembled red carpet. The addition of a giant AHS Wildcat logo on the 50-yard line and the front of the press box was also done. She led the way in cleaning and painting the dressing room red and grey under the stadium. The players would use it at half time instead of being outdoors in the elements.
• With the help from parents, she decorated the locker room at school every Thursday night before the Friday night games.
• Active in all fundraising projects, she helped raise money to purchase an inflatable Wildcat tunnel for the Wildcats to run through for the Friday night games along with a fogging machine.
• In 1976 she was selected to serve on the first ever Abbeville High School Hall of Fame Screening Committee.
• In 1977 the Abbeville High School Hall of Fame held its first induction ceremony. The first year two athletes Thomas “T-Tom” Broussard and Lovic “Tiny” Touchet were inducted.
• Barbara Gayle was instrumental and largely responsible for planning, organizing and hosting the AHS Hall of Fame Induction Social the Thursday evening before Homecoming for many years. This social was open to the public free of charge and sponsored by the AHS Hall of Fame Committee. She was determined that this annual event would be something very special and worthy of those athletes being honored. Because of Barbara, this tradition from 1977 has continued to this day.
• In early 1977 Barbara met with Principal Cecil Picard concerning a special room for the Hall of Fame at AHS. An empty glass walled room at the front entrance was available and construction began for the new home for the AHS Hall of Fame. Over the past 44 years, this space has become packed with Hall of Fame memorabilia, and I suspect that additional space will be needed as the Hall of Fame continues to grow. Today the AHS Hall of Fame room has pictures and stories of more than 50 Hall of Fame Inductees and 20 Honorary Hall of Fame Inductees.
