🧵 From Practice to Production!
Since Tuesday, following the handover of 15 rolls of Kitenge fabric, our tailoring trainees have been putting their skills into practice using real fabric.

They are applying what they have learned in measurement, pattern drafting, cutting, and garment making building confidence, precision, and practical experience with every piece they create.

This is an important step towards helping refugees develop marketable skills, achieve self-reliance, and build sustainable livelihoods.
We are proud to see our trainees turning knowledge into practical skills and opportunities.

Strengthening Skills Through Practice and Listening

Today, The Refugee Voice held a progress meeting with trainees and trainers under our Empowering Refugees through Sustainable Vocational Skills Development Project.

The meeting provided an opportunity to listen directly to our trainees and trainer, understand how the training is progressing, celebrate improvements, and identify the challenges being experienced during the training. Their feedback is essential in helping us continuously improve the quality and relevance of the programme.

We also had the opportunity to hand over 15 rolls of Kitenge fabric to the training centre. The materials will allow our tailoring trainees to move from practicing on paper to working with real fabric, putting their newly acquired skills into practice and developing greater confidence in garment production.

From learning to measuring and drafting patterns to cutting and now working with real fabric, our trainees are taking important steps towards becoming skilled tailors and building sustainable livelihoods.
We believe that skills, practical experience, and access to the right materials can open pathways to dignity, self-reliance, and economic opportunity for refugees.

💙 Give Nenisha the Chance to Learn Again
At just 13 years old, Nenisha Noway dreams of becoming a teacher one day.
After losing her hearing due to illness, she was fortunate to receive a scholarship to a school with trained sign language teachers. For the first time, she could understand her lessons, communicate with her teachers, and enjoy learning.
But when the scholarship ended, Nenisha had no choice but to return to a mainstream school in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.
Today, she sits in class watching her teacher speak, but she cannot hear the lesson. She copies words from the blackboard without understanding what they mean. Every day, her dream slips further away.

Nenisha is not alone.
There are 15 refugee children with hearing impairments facing the same struggle. They deserve the chance to learn in schools with trained teachers and the support they need to succeed.

One month and two weeks into our Empowering Refugees through Sustainable Vocational Skills Development Project, our tailoring trainees continue to make impressive progress and strengthen their practical skills.

What makes this training truly unique is our community-led approach. All our trainers are experienced local experts from within the refugee community who understand the realities of displacement. They speak the local languages used across the settlement and deliver every lesson in a language that trainees understand, making learning more inclusive, practical, and effective. This approach encourages active participation, strengthens understanding, and ensures that no one is left behind because of language barriers.

Every lesson brings our trainees closer to becoming skilled tailors, creating opportunities for self-reliance, dignified employment, and sustainable livelihoods.

We are proud of their dedication and look forward to seeing the beautiful garments they will soon produce.

Empowering Refugee Women Through Practical Skills!

The Refugee Voice (TRV) is proud to witness remarkable progress under our project, Empowering Refugees through Sustainable Vocational Skills Development, funded by the IKEA Foundation through Cohere.

Today, we are delighted to share that the trainees have successfully produced their first batches of bar soap and liquid soap. This achievement demonstrates their commitment, creativity, and growing confidence as they acquire practical skills that can help them establish small businesses, earn sustainable incomes, and support their families.
Beyond soap production, the project also equips participants with tailoring, entrepreneurship, business mentorship, and financial literacy, creating pathways to self-reliance and long-term economic resilience.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the IKEA Foundation and Cohere for investing in refugee-led solutions that transform lives through skills, opportunity, and dignity.
