Before a study involving human participants begins, an important question must be answered:

RECs are independent bodies responsible for reviewing research proposals to ensure that participants’ rights, safety, dignity, and wellbeing are protected. They assess issues such as scientific value, risks and benefits, informed consent procedures, confidentiality, and protection of vulnerable groups.

In simple terms, a REC asks researchers:

A REC is not a barrier to research. It is a safeguard that helps ensure research is conducted with integrity, responsibility, and respect for humanity.

Behind every ethical guideline in research is a lesson learned from history.

The 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 (𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟵) was developed in response to growing concerns about the protection of human participants in research. It was produced by the U.S. National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research to provide a clear ethical foundation for conducting research involving people.

The report changed the way researchers think about participants.

It emphasized that human beings should never be viewed merely as sources of information, samples, or data points. Every participant is a person whose dignity, safety, choices, and wellbeing must be protected.

The principles we have discussed (𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲), continue to guide researchers, Research Ethics Committees (RECs), and institutions in deciding whether research is ethically acceptable.

The Belmont Report reminds us that good research is not measured only by the quality of its findings. It is also measured by:

✅ How participants are treated.
✅ How their rights are protected.
✅ Whether risks are minimized.
✅ Whether the benefits of research are shared fairly.

A researcher may have an excellent research question and a strong methodology, but without ethical responsibility, research can lose its most important foundation: respect for humanity.

When submitting a research protocol for approval by a Research Ethics Committee (REC), researchers are often required to provide evidence of training in Human Subjects Protection (HSP) and/or Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

But why is this important?

Research involves real people who are trusting researchers with their health information, personal experiences, and sometimes their lives. Before allowing a study to proceed, an REC needs confidence that the research team understands how to protect participants.

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗛𝗦𝗣) 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱:

Research should not only produce knowledge; it should also be conducted in a fair and responsible way. The people who participate in research should not carry unnecessary burdens while others enjoy all the benefits.

This is the principle of 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, one of the three major principles of research ethics described in the 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 (𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟵).

In simple terms, justice means:
