It was great to be able to visit Tom's school again and to see the huge progress that has been made there particularly with the buildings and water supply. The contents of the container now mean that the children have tables and chairs to sit at when they eat. More children are starting to board at the school but there is a real fear of children being abducted and their organs sold which is making families frightened to allow their children to walk to school - many school now have a school bus. We worked with teachers on our core skills project which focused on looking after the environment and sharing ideas and thoughts on single use plastic. We also worked with the teachers to develop a reading culture at the school and to extend their knowledge of phonics teaching. Manuel worked with groups of children to explore what it means to be peaceful.
We met two brilliant women who are keen to set up a community project to support women to learn to sew and also to develop their literacy and numeracy skills at the same time. We also met representatives of the British Council who were keen to hear how the partnership is developing.
Many people continue to kindly sponsor some pupils who otherwise would not be able to come to school - the difficulties we have with this system at present is that when the children move to secondary school the cost changes from £50 per year to £225 per year which can be too much for some sponsors.
The school cooks were delighted to have new wellies and aprons and now look very smart! Finally the brass band which is sponsored by Brass for Africa gave us an amazing send-off. I loved it best when the African drums joined in!

Brass for Africa came to the school and will be teaching students in the forthcoming weeks. We just need to get the 40 brass instruments that have kindly been donated and collected out to the school... Any help appreciated!
