Visit to St John Leonard's School June 2018 10/06/2018

It was great to be able to visit Tom's school again and to see the huge progress that has been made there particularly with the buildings and water supply. The contents of the container now mean that the children have tables and chairs to sit at when they eat. More children are starting to board at the school but there is a real fear of children being abducted and their organs sold which is making families frightened to allow their children to walk to school - many school now have a school bus. We worked with teachers on our core skills project which focused on looking after the environment and sharing ideas and thoughts on single use plastic. We also worked with the teachers to develop a reading culture at the school and to extend their knowledge of phonics teaching. Manuel worked with groups of children to explore what it means to be peaceful.
We met two brilliant women who are keen to set up a community project to support women to learn to sew and also to develop their literacy and numeracy skills at the same time. We also met representatives of the British Council who were keen to hear how the partnership is developing.
Many people continue to kindly sponsor some pupils who otherwise would not be able to come to school - the difficulties we have with this system at present is that when the children move to secondary school the cost changes from £50 per year to £225 per year which can be too much for some sponsors.
The school cooks were delighted to have new wellies and aprons and now look very smart! Finally the brass band which is sponsored by Brass for Africa gave us an amazing send-off. I loved it best when the African drums joined in!
Thank you to all at St John Leonard's for an amazing time.

WATER AT ST. JOHN LEONARD'S SCHOOL 13/01/2017

I have been always talking about water issues at St. John Leonard's school. Children have been sloping down the valley to collect water but also carry it up on steep terrain. The young boys and girls quite often briefed teachers about the snakes they find while getting down to fetch water! They have always cried saying they felt chest pains due to heavy water that they carried up the hill.

Some could dirt their uniforms us water leaked onto them. We would fear sending our adolescent girls dues to fears of bad guys!

During times of prolonged drought, water would be drawback; today, it is a very challenging situation. Plants have wilted, animals are dying, humans are feeling the heat from sunshine. It is very dry with too much sun shine.

We are now blessed with this fresh water drawn from beneath the rocks. What a wonder! Small children from within the surrounding community are enjoying water to the fullest! The song goes:

Water, water, water.
Life is water
water is life
Water brings life.

Seeds sprout because water helps.
Animals long for water to gulp.
Humans take a sip of you to survive.
Water, water, water.

From the rains you come,
From the streams you flow,
From the wells you burble.
And now from the rocks you are bumped.
water, water, water, you are a hello.

Sometimes you flood,
But still we love you.
You are missed, we wait patiently.
When you come we smile.
water, water, water you are blessed.

The stout need water.
The big ones need water.
The tall need water.
The giants need water.
Water is for every creature.

We love you when you are clean
We need you when we are dirty.
We want you when we are planting.
We will be with you at all times.
I can say bye to others but not water.
Water water water stay here forever.

Have a read of this information from Tom re water at the school - it is great to see that the new water tank will support the local community as well as the school:

There is a lot of school improvement going on. The conversion of the container is in high gear as you will see in the photos.

Water issues are yet to be solved as its installation is yet to be
accomplished! You will see in the photos different water points have
been fixed around the school!

Today materials to fix a huge water tank have been brought onto the
school site. It will be 10000 liter capacity! Even the community is
going to enjoy this water outside the school fence.

Take a look at these photos sent by Tom showing how the container is being converted...

On 3 December 2016, St. John Leonard's school celebrated a decade since her establishment. There was dancing, singing, drama and reciting. Everyone enjoyed what he or she liked from our menu of the day. There was eating! Pupils who had excelled in different items ie academics, cleanliness, dancing, singing, reciting, speaking English, good morals and many others were awarded gifts from the container! We had many headteachers and teachers from many schools around Mpigi both secondary and primary schools. Bro. John Kizito was among the many guests; he offered to pay school fees for a boy called Patrick who read a very long English speech so well! He also presented a trophy to parents which our children worn in the Mayor's cup tournament! In attendance were the old children of the school who go to different secondary schools. Among the children were those sponsored by different parents from UK; thank you ladies and gentlemen. Our new year's slogan is going to be, "New ideas in a new year." We had guys from BRASS FOR AFRICA represented the organization the their country director Ms Rebbecca who had a bus schedule; they blew a trombone for the gathering, really so amazing. The guys confirmed that they are to teach children at St. john Leonard's school how to play the instrument. Ok, lets wait for them as many of the instruments reach us in Bro. John's school container. see the photos; hope you enjoy them.

This time Downsbrook Middle school from UK clothed them with sweet sweaters. Thank you Downsbrook Middle school for this kind gesture.

Brother John, head teacher of nearby school Dr. Archbishop Kiwanuka Primary School, sent these photos today of the nursery children receiving the cuddly toys we collected at St Paul 's. A container will leave for Brother John's school hopefully soon after Christmas. Again it is being sponsored by the Fonthill Foundation. This time it will be twice the size and contents will be generated from the community of Downs View Special School in Woodingdean. Brother John's school is a state Primary with over 900 pupils and over 100 pupils in each class. 200 pupils board of which 170 are orphans. The school and pupils are in great need of resources.
