As we commemorate International Deaf Awareness Week, I am delighted to join the global Deaf community in celebrating the dignity, abilities, achievements, and contributions of Deaf people.

This year’s theme, “Declaring Deaf Human Rights,” reminds us that Deaf people are equal members of society and are entitled to the same fundamental human rights, opportunities, freedoms, and respect as everyone else.

At Mbale School for the Deaf, we believe that every Deaf learner has the right to quality and inclusive education, access to information and communication, participation in community life, protection from discrimination, and the opportunity to develop their talents and reach their full potential.

Let us use this week to challenge negative attitudes and barriers that limit Deaf people. Let us promote Ugandan Sign Language, accessibility, inclusion, equality, and meaningful participation of Deaf people in decisions that affect their lives.

*Mbale School for the Deaf Joins Nation in Observing National Cleaning Day*

*MBALE*— Mbale School for the Deaf has joined the rest of the country in observing National Cleaning Day, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and community welfare.

The event at the school was led by the Old Students’ Association President, Imalingati Deogratias, who mobilized alumni, staff, and students to participate in the nationwide initiative.

Addressing participants, Mr. Imalingati emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a collective civic responsibility.

"It is everyone's responsibility to maintain a clean environment. Since today is designated for national cleaning, let us always join fellow Ugandans in honoring this day to keep our surroundings clean," Imalingati stated.

He further noted that the alumni association intends to leverage such national events to foster a cleaner, healthier, and more inclusive learning environment for deaf learners. Beyond the physical cleanup, Imalingati reaffirmed the old students’ commitment to ongoing mentorship programs and institutional support for the school.

Before flagging off the exercise, the Headteacher, Madam Akuku Esther, addressed the gathered students, staff, and alumni, highlighting the health and civic significance of the exercise.

She reminded students that community cleanliness is a daily responsibility and a vital sign of patriotism.

"Cleaning our community is part of our daily duty and a sign of respect for government programs. I urge all students to consistently love their country and support national initiatives," Madam Akuku said.

Madam Akuku concluded by expressing her gratitude to the teaching staff, students, and the alumni body for their steadfast dedication and continued support toward the development of Mbale School for the Deaf.

*MBALE DEO COMMENDS MBALE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AT HISTORIC FIRST VOCATIONAL GRADUATION*

*MBALE DISTRICT*– History was made at the Mbale School for the Deaf as over 300 students graduated in various vocational disciplines, marking the institution's very first graduation ceremony for its vocational wing.

The graduates successfully completed courses in both National Certificate and modular programs, spanning fields such as Agricultural Production, Automotive Mechanics, Building and Construction, Electrical Installation Systems and Maintenance, Leather Tanning and Production, Plumbing, Welding and Fabrication, Fashion and Design, Woodwork Technology, and Cosmetology and Body Therapy.

The Chief Guest, Mbale District Education Officer (DEO) Mr. Khaukha Sam Paddy, praised the headteacher for her exceptional leadership and strategic planning in organizing the milestone event after years without a graduation ceremony.

Mr. Khaukha commended the headteacher and staff for restoring peace and academic excellence to the institution following previous periods of unrest.

"The vocational wing of Mbale School for the Deaf is performing wonders and has established itself as the leading vocational institution in the district," Mr. Khaukha noted.

He urged parents and the general public to enroll their children in the school, describing it as well-organized, fully equipped, and ready to impart invaluable practical skills. The DEO pledged his full administrative support to lobby the government to formally code the vocational wing, which currently operates without direct government coding. He concluded by challenging educators to maintain professional standards to help students achieve their career ambitions.

The Headteacher, Madam Akuku Esther, expressed profound gratitude to the parents for their unwavering support, which she noted was instrumental to the students' academic success.

*Show Abilities Uganda Partners with Mbale School for the Deaf to Inspire and Equip Students*

*MBALE*— In a powerful move toward breaking societal barriers, Mbale School for the Deaf recently hosted an inspiring team of youth leaders from Show Abilities Uganda (SAU), an organization dedicated to empowering youth with disabilities.

The visit was aimed at bringing direct mentorship, career guidance, and practical training to the deaf students, equipping them to confidently navigate their paths into the future.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Enkwong Ambrose, an educator who also serves as a youth leader with Show Abilities Uganda, emphasized that their core mission is to champion disability inclusion.

"Our main reason for visiting the school is to educate and break barriers. True disability inclusion helps deaf students build opportunities for all, ensuring they are not left behind," Ambrose stated.

The training sessions heavily emphasized career guidance to help students unlock their latent skills, foster self-confidence, and map out realistic pathways for life after school.

Mr. Yakwaya Fred, the school’s Career Master who also represented the Headteacher expressed immense gratitude to the visiting team. He lauded Show Abilities Uganda for planting seeds of knowledge and hope within the learners. He also extended praise to the internal teaching and support staff for their relentless, unconditional commitment to the students.

Fred used the platform to send a clear message to the broader community regarding how children with hearing impairments should be treated:

Treat deaf learners with the same dignity and respect given to any other child , Provide them with the same foundational support to help them thrive and active collaboration from more organizations is vital to continue breaking down systemic barriers.

Through initiatives like this, the students at Mbale School for the Deaf are proving that a disability is not an inability.
