When we opened doors for the first 14 students in January 1922, fees was 60 shillings, a British currency of the time, for day scholars. This is equivalent to about 84 pounds in today’s British currency and about 400,000 Uganda shilling.

“Makerere is now a school but it is a school which may have a great future, a future as the centre of higher education for the Eastern Africa group of territories…a centre which may become an integral part of the life of Uganda and its neighbouring territories; a place where there shall be provisions alike for the sons of the greatest in the land and the poorest,” Sir Phillip Mitchell, the Governor of Uganda said on speech day in December, 1935.

We are the centre of higher education excellence in East and Central Africa. As we mark 100 years, we celebrate our alumni from all walks of life whose life has been transformed by Makerere University.

With great pleasure, I wish to congratulate you for the good results posted in PLE 2020. With 32 registered candidates, the performance was as follows;

Great appreciation goes to the entire staff for the tireless work, the school committees,pupils, parents and all well-wishers for enabling us take a positive stride.
