EDUCATION FOR NEEDY GIRLS IN UGANDA
Uganda has the reputation of having the highest school drop-out rate in East Africa . Thirty one (31%) of the students in senior form four did not complete ordinary level in 2011. In Northern Uganda the school dropout rate is at is at 37%. When the girls drop out of school they become vulnerable and exposed to harsh circumstances. The major cause of school dropout is lack of school fees. When the girls drop out, they end up getting early pregnancy. This leads to related life complications.
Some ethnic groups believe that a "girl's place in the home, and her primary goal in life is early marriage and raising a family not seeking a career. Girls often marry and start families early in life, which limits access to education, especially in rural Uganda where is common for the girls to get married at 15 or 16 years. Cultural attitudes about girl's roles are strong and rigid. Many ethnic groups do not favor educating girls because they feel that they will just marry outside of the group they know and the value of their education will not benefit clan members.
To contribute towards intervening in the lives of needy girls, a voluntary Organization known as Support for Young People’ Initiatives –Uganda –popularly known as SYPI –UG, has set out a program to help needy girls to access quality education- especially University education. The need at hand is so much and requires concerted effort. At the moment, the 2 girls that we have been supporting have completed University education and both of them were pursuing BBA. One of the girls is a double orphan (has no Father or Mother) and the second one lost a Father. We have identified 3 more girls who qualify for higher education, but have no support for tuition while at the University. One of them has got a Sponsor while other 2 girls and another family whose children were abandoned by their Mother are still on the waiting list. SYPI –UG has a plan to continue expanding the program as more resources become available.
SYPI-UG anticipates that educating and training needy girls will help to raise their family incomes and status and to develop thriving rural economies through active economic participation as entrepreneurs and workers in all sectors.
According to Catherine Bertini the returns on female secondary education and University education are estimated to be in the 15 to 25 percent range, a higher rate of return than for men. An increase of 1% in female secondary school attendance adds 3% percent to the country’s average annual per capita income growth. Investment in girls’ education also provides nations a “demographic dividend “because of productive workforce associated with higher levels of female education. As adolescent girls become more educated and economically empowered women, their influence within the home and community also grows. Educated women are more likely to participate in civic life and to become advocates in community improvements .
Intervening in the lives of the girls offers a critical opportunity for delaying marriage, and prevents the cycle of poverty to the disadvantaged next generation. Empowering girls spurs economic and social growth and leads to transformational change. Education allows them to fulfill their potential and they become full contributors to society.
We wish to appeal to all well-wishers to assist girls in Uganda to access education. Your commitment and contribution can never be small. Little by little we can help one girl “to see a green light at the end of the tunnel”
