Some photos from our ongoing open and free breaking (breakdance) & creative development sessions in Namuwongo slum, Kampala.

It’s a little over a year since through the non-profit organization I founded and currently direct - Imagination Circle, stepped into project zone in the heart of Namuwongo slum and launched a project that centres on using breakdance & creativity to uplift young people while empowering the community. Offering 3 free and open learning sessions a week that are consistent, participatory, simply organized and organized in collaboration with community members.
These sessions include: instructed breaking (breakdance) classes, Physical play, Power talks on life, Cyphers/freestyle performances all intended towards nurturing talents, growing potential, guiding and transforming people + community.

We have seen some solid positive changes, perspective shifts, community involvement and more.

These photos are from KISU (Kampala International School Uganda) hiphop jam, an event I produced for our Hiphop (Breaking & Beatboxing) students.
The objective was for students to show their families & school community creative skills, strengths and abilities they had gained through our activities throughout the academic year.
In addition to breaking battles, we had showcases that featured collaborative efforts among students; beatboxers & guitarists, dancers & Djs among others.

Parents, other teachers, school administrators and other spectators were amazed by what they saw.
The unlimited creativity, collaboration spirit, levels of involvement, efforts to make things work, the patience & support of each other, courage to on stage and present among others.

I feel a strong sense of fulfillment to be able to work with young people. To see, communicate, develop and unleash potential that’s inside them.

archive - I facilitated a session on communicating effectively with young people in schools, ways that empower and encourage them to fully participate.
This was during a series of creative & capacity building teacher seminars we held as Imagination Circle in collaboration with TEN.
As part of the training; we listened to ourselves, asked tough questions, examined our involvement as educators of young people, unlearned outdated ways, learned and relearned and more.

From the archieve.

In May 2025, I was the lead producer for a 1 day long breakdance camp on behalf of Imagination Circle.
We invited semi advanced and advanced breakers (breakdancers)from Mbarara, Wakiso, Jinja, Gulu, Kampala and nearby areas who are active in competing/battling and teaching.
Approx 55 breakers (7 female and 48 male) between 16 & 35 years of age attended a total of 3 workshops which covered workout & warm up, floor-work, combinations, freezes, transitions and general helpful practices in breaking.
Workshops were taught by Kimuli, Darius and Lucas.
Ended the day with a Q&A session during which our 3 instructors plus all attendees shared thoughts and experiences on how to get better, stay active, sustain themselves and keep building their communities.

This camp is part of a series of trainings, workshops & seminars we programmed to offer with the intention of supporting active & competing breakers (and larger urban dance community) to dance better and with purpose.

On behalf of Imagination Circle, I kick started and lead the process to launch an ongoing free & open breakdance program in Namuwongo slum, Kampala.
We are partnering with Rotary community Centre and Yoka zone community to put in place a safe & positive space offering young people learning opportunity at no cost. Since April 2025, we have been offering 3 sessions a week.

📸s are from an arts and creativity based community outreach that featured breakdance, beatboxing, flips & tricks, rap and a mobile library.
This was a launch activity for an ongoing creativity development program for young people, starting off with weekly free & open breakdance classes.
During our nearly 1 year of consistent classes and positive interventions - we have received over 300 young people; engaged meaningfully with parents & community leaders, introduced breakdance which has given young people something positive to engage in, hosted showcase opportunities and more. We have registered some progress!
Through this program, We aim to offer support, together come up with practical solutions and positive alternatives to challenges such as addiction to drugs, engaging in robbery, dropping out of school, unemployment, health issues among others that are currently bothering young people in this community.
