Meet Fridah, Born November 5th 1969

Fridah was involved in an accident at a young age that left her physically disabled.  At this time she was raised by her grandmother and was taught the craft of tailoring and weaving as a way to support her livelihood. Fridah  continues to weave home decor  items using banana fiber - “Obukedo” and raffia. In 2019 Fridah joined Ekilawuli and though their workshops learned the skill of glass bead making and now has combined her crafts incorporating the Ekilawuli beads with her traditional weaving.

Meet Rebecca Namusisi, Born December 1st 1969.

Rebecca began weaving at the age of 18 from her mother ,the  multigenerational craft of weaving  floor mats. As the girl child it was her role to learn the skill to of weaving mats as they carried a lot of respect for women in homes especially when hosting visitors. Years ago women were not allowed to sit on chairs in the home so they began weaving mats as a sign of equality amongst themselves in there homesteads.

Now Rebecca since joining ekilawuli community in 2018 , she uses woven mats as an expression of her craft and art,  weaving traditionally known "Ensaasa" palm leaves and Olubugo barkcloth mixed with contemporary recyled glasdbeads by Ekilawuli  to shine a light on gender equality issues faced by women  within their homes.

Today our participants put their lessons to work and started experimenting with glass bead making. These small pieces of glass are created one at a time and can tell stories through design and color. We love to see artists and community women come together to share in the experience.
