Food for thought...

The end of the term is always bittersweet. We miss the children dearly but all work without play makes us all very dull. Happy holidays everyone!!!

In our line of work, there's nothing quite as rewarding as the satisfied look on a child's face after successfully completing a task/assignment or overcoming an obstacle on his/her own. Our children make us feel so proud! We love our job!

Circle time is a great opportunity for the children to learn and practice seemingly simple 'Grace and courtesy' which doesnt always come naturally to them. Today's grace and courtesy lesson was on how to share the building blocks even when you really want them all to yourself :-)

This morning we chatted to the children about other children who do not have homes and have to live on the streets.

Brycen thought it would be a good idea to give these children sweeties, but we all mutually agreed to make for them a card and give them some coins so they can feel special.

So we made our cards and stuck coins onto them.
Now, it is up to our mommies and daddies to help us deliver these cards to the homeless children on the streets.

This week's Act of Kindness!

The kids are sooo excited about this activity for tomorrow.

Children will always feel like secret kindness ninjas when and leave money for someone that needs it.

We are going to make these pretty cards and stick some coins on them. We need mommies and daddies to drive the children to a place that might hace some homeless people or street children.

Doing acts of kindness with your kids has so many benefits. Kids learn about compassion and empathy and start to develop a sense of responsibility for their world.

You are all free to take part in this activity with us. You may choose to send us a picture of how it turns out. :)

Have Fun!

Yesterday our 10 year old little sister unavoidably took the school bus and came home at around 7.40pm from school. To my suprise, she wasn't even the last child on the bus. There were around 7 other children that were yet to be dropped back home.

On top of that, she had 2 subjects of homework to complete before she had to eat supper, have a bath and go to bed.

My question to teachers, school heads and whoever is concerned is: when do these kids get to be kids. When do they get to learn the important things in life? How will our children ever learn to be great cooks when they get home at 6pm to find that the food has already been cooked? When do they get to sit down with their parents and listen to stories or tell stories about the day? How are they supposed to make their beds every morning when they have to be up by 5am in order to be in school at 7am in time for the oh so great morning work?

I do not understand how a child is the first one to get out of the house and the last one to get home in the evening.

Children in P.7 are treated as though the world will end of they do not study enough so they need to read hard and SAVE THE WORLD! Mind you, these are 11-12 year old children. Yet, they are in class well past 6pm- mbu studying. What is a 12 year old doing in class at 6pm? An adult's work day becomes a drag after lunch time and we cannot wait for the clock to strike 4pm so we can get into our cars and go home to relax. But somehow, we expect our children to be ninjas and take one for the team.

Don't even get me started on Saturday and holiday classes.

If this education system came with a guarantee that any child who partakes in it will automatically be set for life- be rich and successful, I would be the first to sign up. But needless to say, they are subject to unemployment and mediocrity, just like the rest of the world.

Surely, we should not work so hard for mediocrity. With the amount of hard work and effort our children put into school, they deserve to be destined for great things.

Samuel sat at this work station for 3 minutes today. Amazing how much a child can develop in 3 days given the right environment.

Oh our darling boy Brycen. He sat down in the doorway and struggled to put his shoes on his feet. He then jumped up to make sure they were on tight...that's when he noticed me taking a picture and smiled.

The first thing an adult would see here is that the child has put on kibaliga (banana feet).
What we are supposed to see however is that he actually put them on all by himself without asking for help and he was so proud of himself when he managed.

Telling him he didnt put tyem on right would only shutter his confidence and make him feel like a failure.
