Where is all the child led exploration? Great question.

As a blogger who shares ideas online it’s easy to see craft lists or elaborate art projects and think they make up the bulk of my class. Nothing could be further than the truth but we often don’t share the basic and so important child led art or other basic explorations. Today in my classroom I had multiple free choice activities out - a sensory bin, we made@soup at free choice, we had magnetic letters, baby dolls, the book nook had animals to read to, and more. For art we had paper and markers as well as chalk at the easel. Not exactly ground breaking but so important. At our short group art time we painted with corn cobs and our hands :)

I talk about this in all my thematic units and my ebook Little School that the big projects are fun and engaging but the every day ideas are the meat. We need them for creativity and self expression as well as skill building. Blocks, paper and crayons, water tables with just water 💦, puzzles... we don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just get to know your students and help them develop and thrive in your class!

Some people think such a life skill as self regulation is a thing of adulthood that the child will learn when he or she gets older.

That is a parenting misconception. Values are best taught at the earliest opportunity- especially in first five years.

Active play is very resourceful in this. Where a child knows they are tired or bored and move on to the next thing.

On the other hand, addictive video games, TV.. etc are a hindrance to teaching self regulation skills to toddlers and minors in general.

While you may be happy wuth how the devices or tv keeps the child busy, know he or she may be developing an early addiction.

We have developed a complete guide to _active-play_ with resources
Get in touch and lets plan the kind of activities your children need.
