What happens when you pour a full bottle of water into a small glass?
The water overflows.
But the problem is not the water.
And it is not the bottle.
This simple demonstration became one of the most memorable lessons during Al-Mustafa Islamic College's New Student Orientation as students explored the difference between capability and capacity.
The water represented potential— the gifts and possibilities Allah has placed within every individual.
The glass represented capacity— how much of that potential a person has developed.
A small glass may not be able to hold much water, while a larger glass can hold significantly more. Yet both remain glasses, and the water remains the same.
The lesson was profound:
“Capability” is what Allah placed inside you. “Capacity” is how much of that gift you develop.
For the new students, the message was that university should not merely be about collecting certificates.
It should be about expanding the person who receives them.
Through knowledge, discipline, skills, experience, relationships and character, students can progressively increase their capacity to carry the potential they already possess.
The session connected this idea to another important framework: Knowledge + Skills + Attitude.
Knowledge may get someone admitted.
Skills help someone become employable.
But attitude and character influence whether that person can grow, lead and earn the trust of others.
The challenge to every new student was therefore not simply:
“What can you achieve?”
It was:
“How much capacity are you willing to develop?”
At Al-Mustafa, university is not simply a place where potential is measured.
It is a place where potential is developed.

DREAMS HAVE NAMES, DREAMS HAVE FACES: AL-MUSTAFA WELCOMES ITS NEW STUDENTS

There was something different about this year's New Student Orientation at Al-Mustafa Islamic College.
It was not simply about introducing students to their new campus, programmes or university rules.
It was about reminding them why they are here.
The College welcomed its newest students by recognising the journeys that brought them to this moment.
For months, the College had travelled, reached out to schools, engaged parents and prospective students, answered questions and prepared for a new intake.
And then, finally, the numbers became people.
“Those dreams have names. Those dreams have faces. Those dreams are sitting before us.”
Students were encouraged to celebrate not only their admission, but the sacrifices and support behind it. Some had travelled from distant communities. Some came with the sacrifices of parents and guardians behind them. Others had faced uncertainty before finally making it to university.
The message was clear: their arrival at Al-Mustafa is an achievement worth recognising.
The orientation then invited students to look around and recognise something equally important — the people sitting beside them are not strangers for long. They are the people with whom they will learn, struggle, grow and create memories.
Through interactive activities, students began breaking the barriers between strangers and discovering the stories hidden behind unfamiliar faces.
At Al-Mustafa, the new academic journey therefore begins with more than registration.
It begins with belonging.
Welcome Home, Class of 2026.
