Moments from our recently concluded Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia (MEPA) Course 2026, organised by the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda as part of the Paediatric Anaesthesia Training in Africa (PATA) programme.

The training focused on strengthening skills and preparedness in managing emergencies in paediatric anaesthesia, equipping participants with practical knowledge to provide safer care for children.

Patient Safety Starts with Medication Verification

In 2018, two serious medication errors involving prefilled syringes highlighted the importance of verifying every medication before administration.

Following these incidents, hospitals strengthened safety measures by improving barcode scanning, enhancing label verification, and reinforcing a critical reminder to healthcare professionals: never rely solely on the appearance of a syringe.

Every medication should be checked carefully before use. A few extra seconds spent verifying the correct drug can prevent life-threatening errors and protect patient safety.
