The partnership launched the WAAW students’ competition 2023 under three categories: a comic strip to raise awareness of AMR and promote antimicrobial stewardship; a video, song, dance, or rap (maximum 5 minutes) to raise awareness of AMR and AMS in an engaging way; and a researchers’ video (maximum 2 minutes) explaining AMR-related research to a broader audience. The launch was presided over by Dr. Jody Winter, a principal lecturer from the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent UniversityThe submission deadline for entries is Monday, November 13, 2023, via email at [email protected]. All university students across the globe are encouraged to apply, and prize winners will be awarded on November 21, 2023, during the NTU-Mak WAAW event.

The impact of antimicrobial stewardship program implementation at four tertiary private hospitals: results of a five-years pre-post analysis - Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control 01/09/2023

AMS interventions are comprehensive strategies aimed at optimizing the use of antimicrobial agents to preserve their effectiveness and mitigate the risk of resistance development.

This study aimed to measure AMS program impact by comparing a One-year baseline period prior to the implementation of the AMS to four years of follow-up data after the program was initiated in terms of restricted antimicrobials use and cost, and rate of healthcare associated infections (HAIs) occurrence in adult inpatients hospitalized at four HMG healthcare facilities in Saudi Arabia.

These AMS interventions include education of prescribers and other healthcare workers, audit and feedback activities (real-time, either written or oral, or retrospective) and restrictive interventions, such as pre-authorization of targeted antibiotics

Data-mining software to develop automated reports to capture key pharmacy, cost and microbiological data on all adult hospital in patients receiving restricted antimicrobials. Data were collected to evaluate the impact of AMS interventions and on use of restricted antibiotics to identify areas for improvement of antibiotic prescribing for the whole HMG organization.

Antimicrobial stewardship program implementation at four Habib Medical Group (HMG) medical facilities resulted in reduction in the consumption and cost of several broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. It was also associated with lower incidence of healthcare associated infections within these hospitals.

The impact of antimicrobial stewardship program implementation at four tertiary private hospitals: results of a five-years pre-post analysis - Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control Background Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs have shown to reduce the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and health-care-associated infections (HAIs), and save health-care costs associated with an inappropriate antimicrobial use. The primary objective of this study was to compare the...

Unravelling patient pathways in the context of antibacterial resistance in East Africa - BMC Infectious Diseases 18/07/2023

Did you know that patient treatment seeking pathways are key drivers of AMR?

This study reveals how different socio-economic, attitudinal and contextual factors intersect with antibiotic use.

It focuses on thee aspects: patients self treating rather than seeking help at medical facility, having multiple treatment patterns and antibiotic consumption during the pathways.

Follow the link below to the findings in the recent publication.

Unravelling patient pathways in the context of antibacterial resistance in East Africa - BMC Infectious Diseases Background A key factor driving the development and maintenance of antibacterial resistance (ABR) is individuals’ use of antibiotics (ABs) to treat illness. To better understand motivations and context for antibiotic use we use the concept of a patient treatment-seeking pathway: a treatment journe...

5 Moments for Hand Hygiene | Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care 18/07/2023

Hand washing is one of the proposed infection prevention and control (IPC)practices to curb antimicrobial resistance.

WHO recommended 5 moments of hand hygiene to minimize transmission risk of micro organisms between the patient, health worker and environment.

These include before and after touching a patient, before an aseptic procedure, after contact with patient, after body fluid exposure risk and after contact with patient surroundings.
