Meet Sulaiba, an Alumni of the Fontes Youth Center!

When she joined the cultural troops of the Fontes Youth Center in 2016, Sulaiba already had a great passion burning within her. Raised by a single mother alongside her two sisters, the three siblings have been gifted with a talent for music and dancing from a very young age on. After she won a dancing competition at her school, she was approached by one of the FYC leaders, who introduced her to the possibility of becoming a professional performer.

This opportunity allowed her to grow her talent further and pursue many projects all around the world for 4 years. At the FYC, she developed a sense of belonging and was pushed to continuously develop herself. In 2020 however, her industry was heavily affected by the COVID crisis.

Out of a willingness to go out of her comfort zone and challenge herself, she then decided to participate in the FYC business catering course. The skills she acquired there enabled her to find a job, working as an administrative assistant at Fontes Uganda limited and as a hospitality officer at Walindi Point. Thanks to the business and computer skills that she learned, she can now work more independently.

Her career has enabled her to support her family to a large extent and she continues to perform as much as she can next to her occupations.

“Everything is possible, you just need time and commitment to reach your goals, no one was born rich.”

Meet Galabuzi Joseph, an alumni of The Fontes Youth Centre Class of 2018. He offered various short courses at the time including business skills, English, ICT and personal development courses. However currently the Youth center offers a course called Business catering which captures all the short courses as units. The core course which takes 6 months was an initiative to skill students with soft personal development and English, Digital ICT, business skills and hard skills per cohort. It is only ICT that was maintained as a short course for 10 week.

Joseph is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Information Technology at The Kampala International University and also started a rabbit keeping business from the knowledge and skills he acquired while at the Youth Centre as a way to share his knowledge and build other youngsters on the program.

The Lockdown hasn’t stopped us from connecting as a team, last week we hosted a virtual team build! We also had an awareness session with a few important talks about COVID-19 and how to care for yourself and loved ones, mental health while working from home during lockdown, and how to keep motivated.

We definitely had some fun games that the team enjoyed! Share with us how are you staying connected with your teams while working from home.

Right before schools were closed down, we had the privilege of having business plan presentations by our wonderful students. It was truly an accomplishment!

Thank you to our Fontes Youth Centre Facilitators for making this a huge success.

Never enrage an . The elephants in Katunguru Rubirizi have learned how to use the water taps, we installed there, to get drinking water. However, when one of the elephants failed to open the tap, he got furious and destroyed the whole public tap station and the one at the school! As a quick fix, the villagers are covering up the taps with cloth, so that the elephants don’t see them. For a more long-term solution, they are now saving to build a house to protect the taps from the elephants.
