Road safety tips. From Uganda traffic department

1. Driving on the pavement or footpath or traffic island is prohibited.

2. On a two –way carriage having three or more lanes, the driver shall use the left lane except when over taking or otherwise indicated by road signs or road markings.

3. Vehicles of more than 3500kg maximum permissible weight must never exceed 80km/h speed.

4. A driver of a vehicle emerging from a path or an earth track on to a public road other than a path or an earth track shall give way to vehicles travelling on that road.

5. Don’t not park on the railway line and respect all road signage.

When driving on the roads, let’s not expect children to behave like grown-ups . Their sight and hearing are more limited and they can’t judge speed very well. They have a difficulty concentrating and when they get in danger, they may stand still in fright instead of getting away.
So, the duty is on the side of the motorist to protect this child.
Therefore, motorists should know that a person who causes an accident by reckless driving commits an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding two million shillings or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.

SDSK: Speed enforcement operations commence

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has today commenced operations against over speeding drivers.

Traffic officers are using the newly acquired speed guns.

The officers started the operations from Entebbe Express highway where they sensitized, cautioned and warned drivers against driving outside the prescribed speed.

“Since we are heading towards the festive season, drivers tend to over speed leading to accidents,” Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Commander, Rogers Nsereko said.

“Speed is a contributing factor to fatal accidents and since we are heading towards the festive season there's always a lot of excitement leading to accidents. We will ensure everyone reaches safely at their destination and this will only be achieved if we enforce speed regulation. The fine for speed is UGX 200.000=. Put on your seat belts when traveling, it’s for your safety.”

Statistics show that about 3500 people die in accidents every year and to this, Nsereko says “we are calling upon you to drive responsibly.”

SDSK: TIPS TO FOLLOW WHEN YOUR CAR TYRE BURSTS

1. First tip:
When a tyre explodes try to stay as calm as possible and hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands.

2. Second tip:
It's the most important keep your foot off the brakes and don't push it at all. Don’t even look at the brake pedal, don’t even think about it.

3. Third tip:
Stay on your path and try not to change it or get out of anyone’s way, stay on a path as straight as possible.

4. Fourth tip:
If your car has a manual transmission, gradually change to a lower BUT ONLY do so if you feel that the car is completely under control.
If your car has an automatic transmission, stay in the Drive (D) gear DO NOT change.

5. Fifth tip:
Don't use brakes, the drag from the exploded tire will slow you down.

6. Sixth advice:
When speed drops to 50 km/h, you can gently press the brakes until the car stops

SDSK: According to Engineer Andrew Kagoda, Project Coordinator Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS) the pandemic has affected service delivery at the unit; delaying pre-shipment inspections and tests, and implementation of planned activities.

Engineer Kagoda during the welcome and orientation ceremony of new State Minister for Transport Hon. Fred Byamukama held this afternoon, revealed, "we have rising cases of middlemen attempting to infiltrate/undermine the system."

Hon. Fred Byamukama said, "some people expected to see a huge and old person to be the minister but surprisingly, it's the small-young boy in charge. I always tell people that it is not the size nor the age but the brain.

"Before I became a Minister, I visited Uganda Driver Licencing System and I appreciated their services. I got my driving license in just 18 minutes."

On planned activities at the Driver Licensing facility, Engineer Kagoda said mobile teams programs are going to commence alongside the extension of services to an additional five regions across the country.
