Ernest Cook University successfully joined the rest of the world yesterday in commemorating World Physiotherapy Day 2026, under the theme focusing on the role of physiotherapists in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The celebration brought together patients, students, physiotherapists and members of the community for a day dedicated to health education, physical activity, awareness and rehabilitation. Patients who attended benefited from free physiotherapy consultations and assessments, alongside guidance on maintaining an active and healthier lifestyle.

We are grateful to everyone who participated and contributed to making the day a success. Together, we continue to champion the message that movement is medicine and physiotherapy keeps you going! 💙

How POCUS Is Transforming Maternal Healthcare in Uganda 🇺🇬
What happens when nurses and midwives have ultrasound skills right at the point of care?

Ernest Cook University hosted the Of Health—Uganda🇺🇬 , UNFPA Uganda and the Chinese Embassy in Uganda to review the progress of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training for nurses and midwives.

Ernest Cook University was privileged to host a delegation from the Ministry of Health (MoH), led by Dr. Chris Ebong; the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), led by Juliana Lunguzi; and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Uganda, led by Zhang Zaoping (Viktor), a diplomat from the Chinese Embassy representing the Chinese ambassador, handling bilateral and humanitarian engagement in Uganda.

The engagement focused on the ongoing Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training at Ernest Cook University for nurses and midwives. The programme is sponsored and coordinated through the collaboration of these partners, with the aim of equipping frontline healthcare professionals with practical ultrasound skills to support timely and informed clinical decision making during pregnancy of mothers.

The visit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the trainees, discuss the implementation of the programme and explore ways to further strengthen POCUS training and its contribution to quality healthcare delivery.

Ernest Cook University appreciates the Ministry of Health, UNFPA and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for their continued partnership and commitment to strengthening healthcare capacity through skills development and innovation.

Together, we are empowering nurses and midwives with essential POCUS skills for better patient care.

Through practical, hands-on ultrasound training, healthcare workers are gaining skills that can support faster assessment, better clinical decision-making and improved maternal and frontline healthcare.

On 8th September 2026, Ernest Cook University joins the global community in celebrating World Physiotherapy Day under the theme:

“Cardiovascular disease and stroke, and the role physiotherapists play in their prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.”

This year, we highlight the vital role of physiotherapy in promoting healthy hearts, healthy brains and active lives. Through movement, exercise, rehabilitation and patient education, physiotherapists play a crucial role in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke, improving mobility and independence.

As part of the celebrations, ECUREI Physiotherapy Clinic will offer:

Building Practical Skills Through POCUS!

Ernest Cook University students undertaking the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Training Programme, an initiative of the Ministry of Health, are putting theory into practice in the University’s Ultrasound Skills Laboratory.

During this hands on session, students are gaining practical experience in scanning pregnant mothers, strengthening their skills in focused ultrasound assessment and enhancing their readiness to support quality maternal and healthcare services.

The engagement provided an important platform to discuss the regulation and professional practice of allied health professionals, with a focus on registration, licensing and supervision. Community Health Outreach & Camp.

Ernest Cook University was proud to actively participate in a medical outreach & camp organized by Watoto Church, contributing to efforts aimed at promoting early detection and better management of prostate health.

Through our medical team, ECU supported screening and ultrasound scanning for prostate enlargement and possible signs of prostate cancer, helping community members especially men to understand the importance of regular screening and timely medical attention.
