Last week, our Founder and Executive Director had the privilege of joining hundreds of partners, changemakers and friends of the Segal Family Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya, for their Annual General Meeting and 20th Anniversary celebration under the theme "The Next Beat."

It was four inspiring days of learning, connection and reflection on what it will take to build the future we all want to see. One message stood out: if we want a better future, we must be willing to evolve, challenge old narratives, and invest in the change the next generation deserves.

For Mukisa Foundation, the gathering held special meaning. At the 2023 AGM, we were deeply honoured to receive the Barry Segal Fighting for Fairness Award. This year, we were equally thrilled to celebrate our friends at kyaro Assistive Tech, who received the Rising Star Award. As a member of Kyaro Assistive Tech's Board of Directors, our Founder and Executive Director was especially proud to witness this well-deserved recognition of an organisation that is transforming access to assistive technology across the region. Congratulations to the entire Kyaro team!

For those of us working in disability inclusion, these moments represent more than recognition. They affirm that investing in organisations led by and serving persons with disabilities creates meaningful, lasting change.

At a time when funding for disability programmes is often overlooked because it is perceived as too complex or too difficult, we are profoundly grateful to the Segal Family Foundation for believing in us, investing in our vision, and demonstrating that disability inclusion is not a niche issue, but is essential to building stronger, more equitable communities.

Our impact is measured one child at a time: one barrier removed, one opportunity created, one life transformed with dignity, hope and belonging.

Thank you, Segal Family Foundation , for seeing our work, believing in our mission, and using your platform to champion organisations that are creating a more inclusive world. Together, we are changing the story of what is possible❣️

We had the privilege of spending time with 150 Village Health Workers from Wakiso and Kampala Districts in a two day workshop held at Berakhah Medical Centre: Welcome to the Valley of Blessings in Wakiso Town Council.

Together we talked about disability and why early intervention matters.

This is to promote early identification, screening, and build clear referral pathways for children with disabilities and their families to get the support they need to thrive right on time.

VHWs are at the heart of our communities. They help reduce stigma, raise awareness about causes and prevention of disabilities, and connect families to care.

When communities know more, children thrive.

On this Heroes Day, we want to honor our founders, staff, volunteers, funders, and supporters of the last 20 years.

You are our unsung heroes, the ones we fondly call our Mukisa Angels. For two decades you have faithfully given of your time, skills, and resources without expecting anything in return.

Because of you, over 7,000 children and their families have a better life. Because of you, Mukisa Foundation doesn’t just exist, but continues to serve, grow, and thrive!

Just last week we had the honor of gathering some of these heroes in Ostbevern Brock and Muenster, Germany for a week full of festivities . We celebrated 20 years together with laughter, stories, music, and food from both Uganda and Germany. It was a beautiful reminder of how far we’ve come and a total success, thanks to our amazing German hosts.

This was the first of many gatherings we hope to hold across the world.

Would you like to host a Mukisa Foundation 20th Anniversary get-together? Reach out to us and let’s celebrate together , the Mukisa way ❣️

Motherhood is one of life’s greatest blessings, but for mothers raising children with disabilities, it often comes with countless worries and overwhelming responsibilities.
In countries like Uganda, where support systems are still limited, many mothers carry the heavy burden of care while often forgetting to care for themselves.

That is why Pampering Day is always such a special occasion at Mukisa. It is a day to honour these incredible mothers and remind them that they are seen, valued, loved, and deserving of joy and rest.

This year, we hosted over 100 mothers at Tropical Paradise Beach in Garuga for a day filled with laughter, music, dancing, swimming, delicious food, and moments of true relaxation. For many of the mothers, it was their very first time experiencing such fun and freedom. To ensure they could fully enjoy the day, trusted members of our team provided childcare support for those who came with their children.

The mothers left feeling refreshed, energised, and encouraged to face life’s challenges once again.
As a team, days like these leave us overflowing with gratitude that we can walk alongside these beautiful women and, even if only for a day, help make their burdens a little lighter. ❤️

Last week was full of joy, learning, and connection as we celebrated Siblings’ Day in Kampala and at Mukisa Inclusive Village!
We welcomed 231 amazing siblings (ages 5–25) of children with disabilities for a special day designed to help them better understand, support, and stand up for their brothers and sisters.
What they learned:
• Safeguarding and child protection
• Communication and understanding of disability
• How to recognise safe places and safe people
• How to protect themselves and their siblings from abuse
• The importance of speaking up and reporting concerns
We also talked about what Mukisa Foundation does, from therapy to education, and each child had a chance to share about their sibling and how they support them at home.
And of course, we had LOTS of fun! From football and running games to chair dancing, balloon bursting, and more, there was laughter everywhere!
These children are not just siblings; they are protectors, helpers, and champions of inclusion 💪

Today, Mukisa Foundation, together with Special Children's Trust , Special Children’s Forum, joined NUDIPU-Uganda ,the Autism Society and other Civil Society Organisations serving persons with disabilities, appeared before the Joint Committees on Legal, Defence & Internal Affairs of Parliament to present our collective position on the proposed Sovereignty Bill.
We expressed serious concerns that the Bill, in its current form, does not adequately promote or protect the rights, dignity, and well‑being of persons with disabilities. Drawing from the presented position paper, we emphasised that legislation meant to safeguard national interests must also uphold inclusion, participation, and social justice.
As a collective, we recommended that the Bill be restructured through an inclusive consultative process or set aside, as it risks undermining rather than advancing the common good and the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us.”
Mukisa Foundation remains committed to working with Parliament, government, and civil society partners to advocate for laws that meaningfully include persons with disabilities and strengthen Uganda’s democratic and social fabric.
