Yesterday, Banana Industrial Research Development Centre BIRDC BIRDC was honoured to host Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Office of the President, as part of his Technical Visit to STI Institutions and Ventures in the Western Corridor. He was received by the Director General BIRDC, Rev Prof Florence Muranga.

The visit aimed to assess the progress of strategic STI institutions, evaluate the operationalisation of key science and innovation infrastructure, engage implementing teams on emerging priorities and challenges, and provide strategic guidance on Government’s vision for science, technology and innovation-led socio-economic transformation.

At PIBID/BIRDC, the Minister toured the Banana Water Works, Bumbaire Irrigation Project, Valley Dam/Fertigation System, production facilities, laboratories, pilot plant, and technology demonstration sites. He also participated in strategic discussions on the Centre’s achievements, future growth, banana industrialisation, technology transfer, infrastructure expansion, and stakeholder engagement to strengthen Uganda’s banana value chain and agro-industrial transformation.

The visit reaffirmed the importance of harnessing science, technology and innovation to create value, improve farmer livelihoods, and build a competitive and industrialised Uganda.
