The word 'mganda' in Swahili has several meanings. The first entry in the Kamusi ya Kiswahili sanifu, (TUKI, 1980) says it is a bundle or tuft of reaped ears of wheat or rice (mpunga in Kiswahili). It is interesting when you compare this with the origin of the Ganda tribe in central Uganda. 'Omuganda' in the Ganda language means 'a collection of different people'. This is a confluence of meaning of these two languages. Whereas the Swahili use it to refer mainly to grain, the Ganda use it to refer to the close knit brotherhood!

In Kiswahili we say 'bei ghali' but not 'bei kali'. 'Ghali is expensive and collocates with 'bei' (price). On the other hand, 'kali' means 'harsh/sharp/bitter/hot' and is used to describe various things e.g: 1. Jua kali (hot sun). Mbwa kali (fierce dogs). Mzazi mkali (a harsh/strict parent). Pilipili kali (hot pepper)
