Upper primary’s assembly saw years 4 and 5 present and perform to the theme ‘The Importance of Everyone’. Students presented the alphabet as a metaphor for the school; without ‘i’ and ‘u’ the alphabet, and the school are not complete! This was followed by some drama skits and a video highlighting the importance of individuals within the school. The fantastic finale was an energetic, upbeat dance to High School Musicals - ‘We’re all in this together!’ A big thanks to all the parents, teachers and students who came to watch.

NATIONAL MATH PUZZLE CONTEST

Dear Mathemania Puzzle Contest 2017 participants,

Galaxy International School Uganda and Horizon International School Uganda are delighted to welcome you to Mathemania Puzzle Contest 2017. It is with excitement and great anticipation that we await the contest to serve more students every year with the aim of helping them develop some fundamental skills needed for 21st century education.

The puzzles in Mathemania Puzzle Contest are designed around 5 basic skills that are essential for students’ success in different subject areas such as mathematics, sciences and technology. The skills include arithmetic, visual/spatial, counting, pattern finding, and logical reasoning.

You will find puzzles from the past Mathemania Puzzle contests in this booklet. We

hope that this booklet will help you to understand Mathemania puzzles and practice

techniques to solve them. Solving the puzzles without looking at the solutions will help you get many different skills and be ready for solving the new puzzles.

We are looking forward to hosting this grand event in 2017.

Some technical details about the Puzzle Contest are as follows:

1. Levels

Participants are placed at three different levels in the contest according to their class.

Primary Category Local Schools P1 – P7, International Schools Y1 – Y7

Secondary Category Local Schools S1 – S6, International Schools Y8 – Y13

2. Skills

The puzzles in the contest are designed around 5 skills:

• Arithmetic, where understanding of numerical skills are assessed.

• Visual/Spatial, where the visual skills are required to solve the puzzles.

• Counting, where students are required to use a systematic way to count.

• Pattern, where discovery of different level patterns is expected.

• Logical Reasoning, where students use their logical and reasoning skills to tackle the puzzles.

We hope to have a great year, with many of us joining new classes, all teachers are waiting to see your smiling faces every school day and to guide you in achieving your highest potential. We assure you a great learning experience for every child this year.
Get ready to participate in the fun trips, competitions, and exhibitions that bring the classroom lessons and the world around you to LIFE with real world learning adventures and memories that will make you enjoy your learning more. Say hello and make friends with all the new faces you will be meeting in your new classes. Pick a great club of all the many interesting ones we have and learn an extra skill with your favorite coaches.
Remember, you will have to put in more effort and your best foot forward in your studies, behavior and socializing. The performance for the last academic year was such a great improvement and we hope you will perform even better this time around because all your teachers, management and parents of the Horizon family are willing and ready to make it all happen for you and support you at each opportunity and in every caring way possible.
