Peter Sibukule, the Headteacher of Busoga College Mwiri,has thanked the Government for the investment, saying the project marked the beginning of efforts to eliminate pit latrines at the school.
“I’ve been telling them that it’s time for us to get rid of the pit latrines. And this is a beginning point to transform Mwiri,” Sibukule said, promising to maintain the new facilities.
Jinja Acting Resident District Commissioner George William Bameka, who is also a former student of Busoga College Mwiri, commended the Government for the project.
He urged the school community to use the facilities instead of reserving them for visitors.
“Don’t vandalise them because a lot has been invested in this project,” Bameka said.
Eng. David Bateganya, the water and environment ministry’s national projects co-ordinator and a former student of Busoga College Mwiri, urged the schools to properly maintain the facilities.
He said the ministry’s long-term target is to ensure that there are enough facilities in Ugandan schools.
“The acceptable toilet stance ratio is one to 40 learners,” Bateganya said when he was still a student at Busoga College Mwiri in the early 2000s, toilet conditions were so bad that students sometimes removed their uniforms before using them.
“We used to remove our shirts when we were going in there — even the shorts. You go in commando style,” he recalled, drawing laughter from other officials who were present.
