Anniversary Tribute: 34 Years of Missionary Priesthood

A Life given in service
On this jubilee of 34 years of priestly ordination, we celebrate the life and mission of Rev. Fr. Dr. John Richard Kyankaaga, a son of Uganda and a faithful servant of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. Since his ordination in 1992, his journey has been marked by courage, humility, and unwavering fidelity to Christ and His people.

Missionary of hope
From Sudan to Egypt, and now back in Uganda, Fr. Kyankaaga has carried the Gospel into places of hardship and hope. His years in Sudan (1994–2000) were spent among communities wounded by war, where he became a sign of God’s presence—listening, accompanying, and building bridges of peace.

Scholar and teacher
His doctoral studies in Rome deepened his intellectual and spiritual foundations, enabling him to serve as Director of the Dar Comboni Institute (2005–2016). There, he formed missionaries and religious for dialogue with the Arabic-speaking world, strengthening the Church’s mission of encounter and understanding.

Leader and shepherd
As Provincial Superior of the Egypt–Sudan Province (2017–2022), he guided his confreres through turbulent times with wisdom and fatherly care. His leadership was marked by prudence, resilience, and a deep trust in God’s providence.

Formator of the future Generation
Today, at the Philosophy Centre Jinja, he continues to shape the next generation of missionaries. His work as formator and Head of the Language Department ensures that young men preparing for mission are equipped not only with knowledge but with the spirit of listening, dialogue, and service.

His legacy
Fr. Kyankaaga’s legacy is written in the lives of those he has touched:
The Sudanese families who found hope in his presence.
The missionaries who discovered new horizons through his teaching.
The province he shepherded with courage.
The students he now mentors in Uganda.
He is remembered as a man of listening, a scholar of dialogue, a leader of courage, and above all, a missionary of love.

Closing blessing
As he celebrates 34 years of priesthood, we give thanks for his witness. May his life continue to inspire missionaries, educators, and communities to embrace the Gospel with courage and compassion. His journey reminds us that priesthood is not a title, but a lifelong gift of self—poured out in service, consecrated in love, and rooted in Christ.

Today, Pope Leo the XIV released his first apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te ("I Have Loved You"). This first major teaching from the Holy Father takes the Catholic Church to task, with a passionate call for solidarity with the poor and marginalized, and calling charitable works "the burning heart of the church's mission."

A missionary at heart, Pope Leo XIV reminds us all that the Church's mission so to follow Jesus' example by taking up the mantle of social justice in defending the most vulnerable among us.

"As we contemplate Christ’s love, 'we too are inspired to be more attentive to the sufferings and needs of others, and confirmed in our efforts to share in his work of liberation as instruments for the spread of his love.'"

GREEN represents the forests and grasslands of AFRICA.
BLUE symbolizes the ocean surrounding the ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC.
WHITE signifies EUROPE, the seat of the Holy Father and shepherd of the world.
RED calls to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the AMERICAS.
