"I took a risk and I was unlucky."

Those were the words of Dr. Lucille Teasdale after she took risks operating on numerous soldiers brought from the front lines during the civil unrest in Uganda in the 1980s and ended up contracting HIV. She became known as a war surgeon at a time when she found herself the only surgeon capable of performing complex surgery in Northern Uganda. We share her last interview with a Canadian media.

Students and staff of Lacor Health Training Institute were delighted to welcome The Most Rev. Raphael P'Mony Wokorach, MCCJ, Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese, during his pastoral visit on Friday, 14 August 2026.

The Archbishop was welcomed with the vibrant Acholi royal dance, Bwola, before celebrating Holy Mass and sharing words of encouragement with students and staff.

He challenged students to make the most of their education, avoid destructive behaviours, uphold their Christian values, and prepare themselves to become compassionate and competent health professionals.

"We are happy that those who pass through here are sought after even before they finish. That means the quality of training is good."

The visit reaffirmed Lacor's commitment to forming healthcare professionals who serve with both professional excellence and integrity.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗿: 𝗔 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲

When war engulfed Sudan, Ibrahim Abdalla Abdulshafi lost almost everything.

His home in Al Fashir was destroyed. His career with the United Nations came to an abrupt end. His family was forced to flee and rebuild their lives as refugees in Uganda.

But amid all the loss, one concern never left his mind: his youngest son, Wahib.

Born with medical complications that affected his ability to walk, Wahib was scheduled for treatment in Khartoum before war disrupted everything. Years later, after countless setbacks, help finally arrived through a partnership between Lutheran World Federation, the Church of Sweden, and St. Mary's Hospital Lacor.

What many people did not know was that Abdalla was fighting a battle of his own. After suffering a heart attack, he requires daily medication. Yet throughout it all, his focus never changed.

"I sacrifice for the boy first."

This is a story about war, displacement, resilience, and a father's determination to give his child a chance at a better future.

Your willingness to listen to the victims' experiences, alongside advocates from the Uganda Law Society, offered encouragement and hope to those on the path to recovery.
