𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄.

That’s exactly what happened to Rita Amanyire.

She had the bold idea to build a safari business around women. Women-led operations, female guides, a completely different kind of tourism experience in Uganda.
But having the idea wasn’t the hard part. Turning it into a real business strategy was.

Congratulations to our 20 graduates with disabilities, who are now better prepared for employment in the tourism and hospitality sector. Through practical training, they have built workplace readiness, confidence and the skills needed to contribute to the industry.

At the same time, over 180 businesses took part in targeted business development sessions and one-on-one coaching with managers across 6 regions in Uganda. Together, they explored how to put gender-responsive policies into practice and create more inclusive workplaces for women and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Over the past few months, we have seen these businesses move from discussing inclusion to changing how they work. That is where it starts to matter for the women and Persons with Disabilities in their teams.

None of this happened alone. Our thanks go to our partner, Endiro Coffee, for bringing real industry expertise into the training, and to our Ukarimu trainers and coordinators who walked alongside each enterprise and graduate throughout this journey.

Together, we are contributing towards a tourism industry where women and Persons with Disabilities have greater opportunities to participate in the wider sector.

The programme was delivered under the 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘜𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢’𝘴 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦

For Sonia, one of the proprietors of Kyambu Resort in Bundibugyo, that shift began with a recent training bootcamp.

The training helped Sonia move beyond pitching her entire business and focus on developing one clear tourism product: a cocoa farm-to-cup experience for her guests.

In this video, she shares how the training has made her more confident to present the experience clearly to potential investors and clients.

What happens when the hospitality sector moves from talking about gender inclusivity, to taking action on it?

Across Uganda’s tourism and hospitality industry, hotel managers and business owners are making gender inclusion part of their everyday practice. They’re creating workplaces where people of all genders can grow, contribute, and take on new opportunities.

At Ukarimu, we have seen that these changes do not always start with big policies. They often begin with simple, intentional decisions that make workplaces more inclusive, supportive, and better for everyone.

Working alongside tourism and hospitality enterprises, we continue to explore practical ways to strengthen workplace culture through inclusive leadership and everyday practices. The result is stronger teams, better collaboration, and hospitality businesses that are sustainable.

In partnership with and , we’ve officially kicked off an intensive three-week training bootcamp under the WeWork – Decent and Green Jobs for Youth project.

Over the coming 3 weeks, participants will strengthen their skills in sustainable tourism, business development, laying the foundation for inclusive growth and real opportunities within their communities.
