The war in Ukraine is resulting in an enormous amount of grief, victims and a huge flow of people fleeing the country. As a group of friends and hiking enthusiasts, we want to make a personal contribution. On 19 March, rather than going on our annual tour, we will now drive two vans to the Polish-Ukrainian border, where we will drop off requested supplies and then collect [12] refugees for whom a temporary home with host families in the Netherlands has been arranged. We will drive from Holland with two vans, filled with supplies to a place Premysl on the Polish-Ukrainian border. Each van has 3 drivers, so we can do the entire trip without any major breaks. We bring our Polish-Dutch friend Natalia, who can help with communications on the ground as she is fluent in Polish and also speaks some Ukranian. At the border we will hand over the supplies to a known transporter, who will then carry them to the final destination in Zhytomyr (see map). This city has been bombed by Russia with devastating consequences. There is a school based in Zhytomyr, currently also functioning as a orphanage.

We met Joanna Niewczas at the Warsaw reception point of The Central Sports Centre Torwar. She has been a full-time volunteer leader, co-managing a facility of 500 beds for refugees, organizing meals from local restaurant owners, co-orchestrating registration of refugees, matching refugees with transport and long-term housing solutions, addressing health and mental needs, while upping the ante for the Polish authorities to do more via her presence on TV and news outlets. What an amazing inspiring woman!! She also helped us with finding our first two refugees (Olena en Platon) to bring to the Netherlands. Another big thank you Joanna!!

It was humbling to meet Pawel Mystkowski today. A truly amazing Polish individual who from the first day of the war has been shuttling refugees from Ukraine to Poland. From Zjytomyr, Kyiv to Warsaw. He became a regular visitor to the Zjytomyr school shelter and on his next trip he will be doing the last-mile delivery of the medicines, food and other goods to Vasily and team. Big thank you Paweł Mystkowski!!

Just across the border of Ukraine, Poland has turned a Tesco shopping mall into a refugee shelter and transport junction. Orchestrated by the Polish army, food is provided, sleeping cots are setup in former mall shops. One can register with the local authority with your passport and your transport offering is being matched with refugee needs in real time.
