Scientific research conducted at Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University was presented at one of the most prestigious international scientific forums in the field of military medicine and surgery — the Military Surgical Science Symposium 2026, held in London.

The symposium, organized by the Academic Department of Surgery and Trauma at the Royal College of Surgeons of England with the support of the Conflict Wound Research Network (CWRN), brought together leading military surgeons, researchers, and clinicians from the United Kingdom, the United States, Ukraine, and many other countries to discuss modern approaches to combat trauma treatment and the delivery of medical care in conflict settings.

The presentations were based on Ukraine’s unique experience in treating combat-related injuries acquired during the full-scale war. Of particular interest to the international audience were studies focusing on the use of laparoscopic techniques in the management of combat abdominal injuries and modern approaches to the treatment of carotid artery injuries in Ukrainian field hospitals.

Military Surgical Science Symposium 2026 became another important platform for sharing Ukraine’s unique medical experience, highlighting the strong scientific potential of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University and fostering cooperation with leading scientific and medical centres around the world.

Graduates of the International Faculty of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University who are completing their medical studies are successfully undertaking their final Attestation examination.

The examination is conducted at the university’s OSCE Centre in the presence of the Attestation Commission, with technical support provided by specialists from the Centre for Distance Education, Telemedicine, and Quality Assurance in Education.

The attestation process is supervised by the university administration and the faculty dean’s office. According to Dean Associate Professor Taras Ivanenko, international students approached their studies responsibly and, in addition to mastering theoretical knowledge, actively sought to develop practical clinical skills. He noted that graduates will retain positive memories of the university, having benefited from its advanced technological facilities, extensive library resources, and the dedicated work of all departments that prepared them throughout their studies, including for the final attestation process.

The Chair of the Attestation Commission, Professor Hennadii Lezhenko, also expressed confidence in the students’ successful performance. He emphasized that the commission primarily evaluates professional competencies. Students are required to demonstrate their knowledge in four core disciplines: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.

The examination assesses not only theoretical knowledge but also students’ ability to apply that knowledge in practice. It provides a comprehensive demonstration of their readiness for independent professional work. Graduates complete ten examination stations, with virtual patient technology being used as part of the assessment process.

The attestation is distinguished by its clear organization, the coordinated work of the commission and moderators, and the responsible attitude demonstrated by the graduates throughout the examination.

At the Educational and Scientific Institute of Postgraduate Education of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, participants of the secondary specialization cycles in “Ultrasound Diagnostics” and “Radiology” completed their final examinations at the Interdepartmental Training Centre.

The trainees studied under highly qualified instructors from the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine, Radiation Diagnostics, and Radiation Therapy, who possess extensive clinical and teaching experience.

The programme was conducted in a blended learning format, allowing participants to practice practical skills using real models at the Training Centre, communicate directly with instructors, and attend lectures both live and in recorded form.

The examination was conducted in two formats. Physicians taking the in-person exam performed ultrasound examinations on real patients, assessing the vascular system, cardiovascular system, thyroid gland, and other organs. All participants successfully completed the tasks, demonstrating high-quality knowledge and professional competence, and received certificates in functional diagnostics.

The continuing strong interest of practicing physicians in professional development at ZSMPhU is evidenced by the fact that 90 applicants have already registered for the ultrasound thematic improvement course scheduled for autumn.

At Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, a warm and symbolic celebration of Vyshyvanka Day was held with the participation of Indian medical students. For international students, the event became an opportunity to become more familiar with Ukrainian traditions, experience the atmosphere of national unity, and express respect for the culture of the country where they are receiving their medical education.

The participation of Indian students in the celebration demonstrated intercultural openness, genuine interest, and friendly support. Students paid special attention to the symbolism of Ukrainian embroidery, its ornaments, colours, and regional characteristics. For many of them, it became an opportunity to better understand the depth of Ukrainian cultural traditions and their importance in contemporary Ukrainian society.

For future doctors, intercultural communication is an especially important component of professional development. The medical profession requires not only strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but also humanity, empathy, and respect for the traditions and values of other people.

The celebration of Vyshyvanka Day became a vivid example of how Ukrainian traditions can unite students from different countries around the world.

At Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, the specialization course in Maxillofacial Surgery has been successfully completed. Modern reconstructive maxillofacial surgery is a high-tech and knowledge-intensive branch of medicine that is rapidly developing and attracting trainees from various regions of Ukraine.

The programme brought together young and enthusiastic physicians who chose to master the complexities of maxillofacial reconstruction through intensive offline training at ReFace Dental Clinic, one of the clinical bases of the Department of Propaedeutic and Surgical Dentistry of ZSMPhU.

The main focus of the professional training was the comprehensive restoration of the anatomical integrity and functional architecture of the dentofacial system and facial skeleton affected by civilian and war-related injuries, congenital anomalies, oncological diseases, and other destructive conditions.

The specialization course combined advanced theoretical preparation with practical clinical experience, enabling participants to improve their surgical skills, gain hands-on experience with modern treatment approaches, and deepen their professional competencies in the field of reconstructive maxillofacial surgery.

Another guest lecture for students of the Educational and Professional Programme “Dentistry” and the Educational and Scientific Programme “Dentistry” at Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University was delivered by Professor Guillermo Pérez Cortés (Mexicali, Baja California) on the topic “Comprehensive Treatment of Patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ Disorders).” The lecture topic was chosen deliberately, as joint pathology remains one of the pressing issues in modern dentistry.

Various dental conditions combined with temporomandibular joint disorders require a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment planning in order to normalize occlusal, muscular, and joint relationships.

During the lecture, key issues related to the treatment and rehabilitation of adult patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction associated with orthodontic pathology were discussed. The lecturer shared his own clinical experience, presenting examples of splint therapy as the first stage before fixed orthodontic treatment and demonstrating, through clinical cases, various applications of braces, aligners, and orthodontic appliances.

The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which participants discussed the most relevant aspects of this pathology.

Histology is fascinating!
A practical histology session with first-year students from Group 1 of the First Faculty of Medicine is being led by Dr Olena Popazova, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology. These students have only recently begun to study histology. Now, together with Olena Oleksandrivna, they have immersed themselves in general histology. Each session is a creative endeavour by a lecturer who loves her discipline, respects every student as an individual, and strives to teach them to think and understand why histology will be useful to them in their profession.
The future doctors will study histology throughout the year: in the first semester it is general histology, in the second – specialised histology, organ systems, regulatory systems and internal systems. Ahead lies a test and an exam, and in the future – the KROK exam. To ensure the material is firmly retained, Olena Oleksandrivna organises ‘KROK-style’ training sessions at the end of each class – they go through ten questions, and each student must briefly and coherently explain one topic. Everyone tries to present their topic more engagingly than the next; the group is working hard!
