Flamingos can cope with even the most extreme natural conditions, in which only a few other species survive. For example, they are found in very salty or alkaline lakes. This is due to the presence of a large population of crustaceans (such as artemia) in highly saline water bodies, where fish do not live due to high salinity. Crayfish are the main food of flamingos. Flamingos can also be found on alpine lakes. In addition, they are able to withstand very large temperature differences.

Flamingos live in large colonies on the shores of small ponds or lagoons. Flamingo colonies often number in the hundreds of thousands. However, poaching and the destruction of flamingo nests have led to a worldwide decline in their population. Flamingos lead a mostly sedentary lifestyle, only northern populations of pink flamingos are migratory [source not specified 261 days]. During migration, pink flamingos can reach Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, surrounded by mountains, and climb Lake Elementeita at 5,825 feet in Kenya's Rift Valley.

The genus flamingo includes the largest members of the family - red and pink flamingos [4]. Although Allen believed that the pink flamingo was the largest and the red one was only slightly smaller than it [4], modern scientists consider the Caribbean species to be the largest [source not specified for 257 days]. The third member, the Chilean flamingo, is smaller than the Andean short-beaked flamingo, but larger than the smallest members of the family, the James flamingo and the small flamingo.
