In addition to the Republic of China, the island is claimed by the Communist Government of the People's Republic of China (see Two Chinas). The largest city is Xinbei. Located in southeastern East Asia, southeast of mainland China. In the east and northeast, Taiwan borders the waters of Japan and the Ryukyu Islands. To the south of it are the Philippines.
