Camel, giraffe, and your accent ๐คจ
I'm not sure if everybody is going to like the statement that follows but I do agree with it.
Here is the result of the study by Derwing, Munro, and Lippi-Green.
These scientists state that speaking with an accent, although being completely understood, is perceived negatively by those who listen ๐ฎ. You are judged based on your accent; the listeners might trust you less because of the way you speak. (Yeah, discrimination/human nature.) Prejudice in society about the accent is very stable. Sure, this is not ok... Still, it is a proven fact ๐คท.
Here is what the experiment showed.
Speakers with a standard English accent, on the one hand, and a foreign accent, on the other hand, delivered the exact same message: a giraffe can stay without water longer than a camel (which is true). The study found that people with a "severe" accent were less likely to be taken seriously.
The profession of a speaker also matters. Lawyers are more strictly evaluated based on their accents. However, in an academic environment, people are more lenient ๐ค.
So, if you have doubts about your pronunciation, and oral communication is an important part of your life, you need to act immediately ๐๐ง.
