🇺🇦 🎉🇬🇧 Double Celebration of two successful PhD defences under Co-Supervision Research fellowship programme with the University of Liverpool

We're proud to congratulate two of our researchers on the successful defense of their PhD dissertations, both conducted under the Co-supervision Research Fellowship Programme within a UK–Ukraine Twinning initiative (Twinning Ukraine) between Sumy State University and our partner, the University of Liverpool.

🔹 Maryna Rozhkova, Department of Economic Cybernetics, defended her dissertation "Cyber Risks in Conditions of Digital Transformation of the National Economy: Countermeasures." Maryna spent several months on our twin partner's campus conducting her research under the co-supervision of Dr. Hanna Yarovenko (Sumy State University) and Prof. Corina Constantinescu, Director of the Institute for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics at the University of Liverpool.

🔹 Anastasiia Illiashenko, Department of Marketing, defended her dissertation "Green Marketing of B2B Enterprises in the Conditions of Industry 4.0," exploring digital business transformation, corporate environmental responsibility, and sustainable marketing practices in the B2B sector. Her research was jointly supervised by Prof. Olena Chyhryn (Sumy State University) and Dr. Peter Guenther, School of Management, University of Liverpool, UK.

Both achievements reflect the strength and depth of the academic collaboration between our institutions, and the value of co-supervised research in advancing new ideas across economics, cybersecurity, and sustainable marketing.

🎉 Sumy State University has won a new Erasmus+ Capacity Building project — INGROW-EU!

🇺🇦 🇩🇪 🇱🇻 🇵🇱 Together with 7 Ukrainian universities and partners from Germany, Lithuania and Poland, and coordinated by Odesa National Economic University, we're launching a 3-year project: "Enhancing Information Systems Competences for Sustainable Business Growth: EU Experience for Ukraine."

The goal: equip Ukrainian students, faculty, migrants/internal displaced persons and university staff with modern ERP skills, with a strong focus on social and environmental reporting in line with the EU's Green Deal and CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) standards. New disciplines and a micro-credential programme will help bridge Ukrainian and EU digital business standards — supporting the country's post-war recovery and EU integration.

For our faculty and students, this means new specialized courses, hands-on training in leading ERP systems, staff and student mobility opportunities with our partner universities in Germany, Lithuania and Poland, and a brand-new micro-credential in sustainability reporting for business.

🌎 RESTART project selected for Horizon Europe Twinning funding

RESTART – Resilience and Excellence for Social Transformation and Adaptive Recovery in Turbulence – will become the first Horizon Europe project coordinated by Sumy State University. Bringing together an international consortium of leading European universities and research organisations, the 36-month project has a total budget of €1.5 million (€1,499,998.96) and received 14 out of 15 points in the European Commission's evaluation, confirming the high quality of its concept, partnership and implementation approach.

The RESTART consortium brings together:

The project will strengthen SumDU’s scientific and innovation capacity, support the development of research management and deepen the University’s integration into the European Research Area.

RESTART will focus on social resilience and adaptive recovery in crisis conditions across four interconnected dimensions:

🔹 psychosocial resilience;
🔹 socio-economic recovery;
🔹 governance and institutional capacity;
🔹 information resilience.

The project activities will include training, mentoring, research placements, summer schools, joint publications and the exchange of expertise among partner institutions. The consortium will also develop practical tools for resilience assessment, scenario planning and policy recommendations for public authorities.

The project concept was shaped with a significant contribution from Professor Andriana Kostenko (Андріана Костенко). The preparation of the proposal was coordinated by Dr. Alla Krasulia and Dr. Tetyana Mayboroda from the SumDU International Relations Office in cooperation with the University’s Grant Support Unit.

RESTART marks another important milestone for SumDU as the University’s second Horizon Europe project selected for funding in 2026 and its first as project coordinator. SumDU has now six Horizon Europe projects in its portfolio over the recent years , demonstrating its increasing capacity to lead international research collaborations and generate knowledge that supports Ukraine’s recovery and strengthens the resilience of its communities.

🇳🇴🇺🇦Nansen EDU: SumDU Secures Four Ukrainian–Norwegian Cooperation Projects

Sumy State University continues to expand the geography and instruments of its international project cooperation. This year, the Norwegian-Ukrainian Nansen EDU programme has become a new direction for SumDU, with an impressive first result: the University has joined four projects selected for funding.

The competition was strong, with only 16 projects selected out of 76 applications. SumDU is represented in four of them.

What makes this result particularly significant is the diversity of areas addressed by the projects, all highly relevant to both the University and Ukraine:

🔹 FLEX-EDU: developing flexible and resilient higher education systems for crisis and post-crisis contexts;

🔹 BRIDGE-Ukraine: strengthening resilience, integrity and digital development in journalism education;

🔹 CareBridge: training psychologists and community mental health specialists;

🔹 Building Internationally Aligned Paramedic Education and Community Emergency Support Structures in Ukraine through Norwegian Partnership: advancing paramedic education and community emergency support systems.

Higher education, journalism, mental health and emergency medical care represent four different areas in which SumDU teams bring relevant expertise and will further develop it together with Norwegian and Ukrainian partners.

For the University, this is also an important step towards diversifying its grant portfolio and expanding participation in new international funding programmes.

We thank the SumDU teams and project partners for their joint work on the applications. Ahead are four new projects and a new stage of cooperation within Nansen EDU.

🎓 SumDU Representatives Explore European Alumni Engagement Practices at SGH Warsaw School of Economics

📅 From 6 to 10 July 2026, representatives of Sumy State University took part in the Third Study Visit of the international ALMEX project — “Alumni Management Excellence: Building University Capacity for Sustainable Graduate Engagement” — hosted by SGH Warsaw School of Economics in Poland.

👥 The SumDU delegation included:

🔹 Alla Krasulia, Head of the International Relations Office
🔹 Alona Yevdokymova(Альона Євдокимова), Head of the Practice and Employer Relations Unit
🔹 Anna Nenia, Head of the Department of Information Technologies
🔹 Irina Tsehelnikova (Slabko), Head of the General Administration and International Protocol Unit

📚 During the five-day programme, participants explored how SGH develops systematic cooperation with its graduates. The agenda covered the university’s alumni engagement strategy, the work of the Career and Alumni Centre, Poland’s ELA graduate tracking system, mentoring programmes, alumni associations, CRM systems, data protection and the use of artificial intelligence in communication with graduates.

🤝 Particular attention was given to the role of alumni in supporting students, improving educational programmes, developing professional networks and strengthening cooperation with employers and businesses.

🇺🇦🇵🇱 The Ukrainian delegation also visited the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland (Ambasada Ukrainy w Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej/Посольство України у Польщі) and met with Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Poland Vasyl Bodnar. The discussion focused on cooperation with Ukrainian alumni living in Poland, the development of Ukrainian-Polish academic partnerships and the involvement of graduates abroad in university initiatives.

🌍 The visit to Warsaw completed the ALMEX study programme following earlier visits to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Alicante(UA - Universitat d'Alacant / Universidad de Alicante)

🚀 The project is now moving to the implementation stage. By the end of November 2026, Ukrainian partner universities are expected to develop bilingual Alumni Web Hubs and prepare the institutional basis for introducing modern alumni relationship management systems.

💻 For SumDU, the next steps include developing digital alumni services, training a dedicated team and building a sustainable model of cooperation with graduates.

🏆 A joint paper by the libraries of Sumy State University and the University of Liverpool has received the LIBER Award for Library Innovation 2026.

The award was presented on 2 July during the LIBER 2026 Annual Conference in Trondheim, Norway, which brought together around 500 representatives of the European research library community.

The winning paper, “United Libraries: Sumy State University and the University of Liverpool”, was prepared by Olha Krytska(Ольга Крицька), Director of the SumDU Library (Бібліотека Сумського державного університету / SUMDU Library), and Matt Greenhall, Director of the University of Liverpool Library. Matt Greenhall presented it in Trondheim on behalf of both teams, followed by a video address from SumDU colleagues.

The presentation focused on:

🔹 cooperation between the two university libraries since 2022;
🔹 the resilience of Ukrainian libraries during the war;
🔹 the role of international partnerships in professional development;
🔹 the exchange of expertise and resources between SumDU and the University of Liverpool.

Around 150 participants attended the presentation. After watching a video about SumDU, the audience responded with prolonged applause.

The award recognises the innovative work of the SumDU Library, the resilience of the Ukrainian library community, and the value of the long-term partnership between SumDU and the University of Liverpool.

🇦🇿🎓🇺🇦 Sumy State University presented its educational opportunities at the Study in Ukraine exhibition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The event brought together more than 20 Ukrainian higher education institutions and became a platform for presenting Ukrainian education to prospective students, as well as for strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

SumDU was represented by Tetyana Mayboroda, Deputy Head of the International Relations Office. Visitors learned about the university’s English- and Ukrainian-taught programs in:

🔹 medicine;
🔹 information technology;
🔹 management and business;
🔹 engineering.

The participants also discussed academic mobility, international cooperation, and new educational opportunities for Azerbaijani youth.

Despite the challenges caused by the war, Sumy State University continues to provide quality education, develop international partnerships, and remain open to students from around the world.

Participation in the exhibition helped increase the visibility of SumDU’s educational programs in Azerbaijan and establish new contacts with representatives of the academic and educational communities.

🇺🇦 How can the story of a Ukrainian university during the war be heard in Europe?

Through the voices of real people – students, academics, and staff who continue to study, teach, work, and build international cooperation despite the realities of war.

🎙️ Sumy State University, together with the FilmEU European University Alliance, has completed the international podcast project FilmEU Without Borders – Ukraine.

The project tells the story of Ukrainian higher education through four personal conversations with representatives of SumDU. Each episode shows how the university community continues to live, learn, support one another, and remain connected with Europe while operating just 30 kilometres from the Russian border.

🎧 The podcast series features:

🔹 Zakhar Iuvko – Master’s student in Journalism and journalist at CUKR, who spoke about studying, working, and growing professionally in a frontline city.

🔹 Anna Markhel – student of Germanic Philology, who shared her experience of forced relocation to Poland and continuing her studies at SumDU online.

🔹 Dr Olena Bondarenko Associate Professor and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications, who reflected on education, responsibility, and support for students during wartime.

🔹 Dr Alla Krasulia – Head of the International Relations Office, who spoke about international cooperation, resilience, and partnerships that continue even under air raid sirens.

🌍 Each Ukrainian story became a dialogue with interviewers from FilmEU partner institutions. This made the project not only a podcast series, but also a space for understanding, trust, and genuine human connection between academic communities.

🤝 Importantly, FilmEU Without Borders – Ukraine was implemented without dedicated funding. It became possible thanks to voluntary work, professional commitment, and the shared belief that Ukrainian universities must remain visible, active, and heard in the European Higher Education Area.

✨ For SumDU, this project is an important step in strengthening cooperation with FilmEU and creating new opportunities for students, academics, and staff.

🇬🇧🤝🇺🇦 Sumy State University Receives Humanitarian Aid from the University of Liverpool

Sumy State University has received a large shipment of humanitarian aid from the University of Liverpool, its twin university partner under the UK–Ukraine Twinning Initiative (Twinning Ukraine)

The aid included furniture for teaching and office spaces, books for the university library, medicines, walkers, medical devices, hygiene products, household goods, clothing, blankets, bedding, and food.

📦 In total, more than 800 items weighing over 8 tonnes were delivered to SumDU.

These resources will help improve study and working conditions, support the university’s clinical facilities and the Academic and Research Medical Institute, and meet the needs of the university community.

We sincerely thank the University of Liverpool for its continued support and solidarity. Special gratitude goes to Sacha Bunatyan and all British and Ukrainian volunteers who helped prepare and deliver the shipment.

The partnership between SumDU and the University of Liverpool continues to develop with the support of Cormack Consultancy Group and the President of Ukraine Fund.

Such cooperation provides practical assistance to the university community and strengthens international solidarity with Ukraine.
