HOW TO STUDY FREE IN GERMANY

BBC reported that Germany has recently abandoned tuition fees altogether for international students. German and International students pay similar very negligible certificate fees for obtaining a degree from German university.

Other popular destinations of studying abroad, like UK, USA and Australia, discriminate international students on the basis of tuition fees, Germany also provides full financial support through various scholarships programs.

DAAD Scholarships

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a publicly-funded independent organization of higher education institutions in Germany. Each year DAAD, its Regional Branch Offices, its Information Centers, and DAAD Professors around the globe provide information and financial support to over 120,000 highly-qualified students and faculty for international research and study per year.

Requirements to Study in Germany

Visa and Residence Permit

As an international student you may need an entry visa for Germany depending on where you come from and how long you plan to stay here. For more information about visa requirements, contact the German embassy or German consulate in your home country.

Proof of Financial Resources or Scholarships

Before you begin your studies, you will have to prove that you have enough money to support yourself. In most cases, applicants have to prove that they have around 8,000 euros at their disposal for one year.

University Entrance Qualification

If you want to study at a Germany university, you will need a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” – or “university entrance qualification”. This is a school-leaving certificate which qualifies you for university study.

German Language Skills

For most degree programmes, knowledge of German is a prerequisite for admission to German university. However, you don’t need to know German if you intend on enrolling in an international degree programme.

Health Insurance

If you’d like to study in Germany, you have to have health insurance. You will need to present proof of health insurance when you enroll at university and apply for a residence permit.

Aptitude Test

With the Test for Foreign Students (TestAS), you can realistically assess your chances of completing your degree programme successfully. The test is comprised of three parts: the “onScreen” language test, the Core Test and “subject-specific test modules”.

Germany has many different kinds of universities. They all offer excellent quality. But with so many to choose from, it’s not always easy finding the right one. We help you understand what’s what.

1. Find a university

Germany has public and private universities. They are usually divided into universities, universities of applied sciences and colleges of art, film and music. Find a university which is of your interest.

The vast majority of students are enrolled in state-run universities. Anyone studying at these universities pays no or only a nominal amount of tuition fees.

2. Find a study programme

Use site:de university Google search for searching universities and their courses.

3. Find International Degree Programs

Almost all universities have international degree programs. International students must focus on finding international degree program or they’ll have to qualify for the German language requirement.

4. Check admission requirements

Check the admission requirement with the university’s admission office.

5. Check German language requirement

International degree programs do not have German language requirement. However for other programs you need German language test completion.

6. Decide how to finance your studies

Decide how you want to fund your studies. Scholarships, Loans or self-funded options are available. For Self-funding options you need to show financial backing documents.

7. Apply for Visa

Once accepted by the university you’ll need to apply for Visa in your home country.

8. Find accommodation

After granted Visa you must 1st contact university’s international office for cheaper accommodation. Many international students also live in shared accommodation off campus.

Applications are invited for Czech Government Scholarships available for foreign nationals from developing countries to pursue Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral degree program at public universities in the Czech Republic. The scholarships may not be granted to persons under 18 years of age (the applicants have to turn 18 as of 1 September of the year when they commence studies in the Czech Republic at the latest). These Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study. The application deadline is 30 September.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the field of Economics, Agriculture, Informatics, Environment and Energetics at public universities in the Czech Republic.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral studies/Language and preparatory studies at public universities in the Czech Republic.
Scholarship Provider: Government of the Czech Republic. Sponsor: International Relations Department of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEYS), Development Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Scholarship Awards Within The Foreign Development Assistance Programme.
Scholarship can be taken at: Czech Republic

Eligibility:
-The scholarships are intended solely to promote the studies of adults who are foreign nationals from developing third countries in need. Neither a citizen of the Czech Republic, nor a citizen of a member state of the European Union, nor any other foreign national with a permit to permanent residence on the territory of the Czech Republic may therefore be granted this type of scholarship. Furthermore, the scholarships may not be granted to persons under 18 years of age. (The applicants have to turn 18 as of 1 September of the year when they commence studies in the Czech Republic at the latest.)
-In Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral Study Programmes plus one-year Preparatory Course of the English language (Which is combined with other field-specific training): Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools, or Bachelor’s / Master’s degree courses, as applicable, Who can Enroll only in Study Programmes in which instruction is given in the English language. Depending on the subject area, Applicants are normally required to sit entrance Examinations at the higher education institution Concerned. Successful passing of Entrance examination constitutes a precondition for the scholarship award; or
-In follow-up study Programmes Master or Doctoral Study Programmes: Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates of Bachelor or Master Study Programmes, respectively, Enroll in the WHO study Programmes with instruction in the English language.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Czech Government Scholarships are available for foreign nationals from developing countries. A limited number of scholarships are also offered to applicants from selected developing countries through UNESCO.

Scholarship Description: The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.

Duration of award(s): These Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study.
(1) Pursued in the Czech language:
-Bachelor’s study programmes (three- to four-year long);
-Master’s study programmes (comprehensive four- to six-year long programmes);
(2) Language and preparatory studies (one-year long; only for those who have applied for a scholarship to study in the Czech language) – provided for by the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (“ILPS”) of Charles University;
(3) Pursued in the English language:
-Selected follow-up Master’s study programmes (one- to three-year long);
– Selected Doctoral study programmes (three- to four-year long).

What does it cover? The scholarship covers the necessary costs related to staying and studying in the CR. The scholarship amount is regularly amended. Currently the amount paid to students on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or follow-up Master’s study programme stands at CZK 14,000 per month, whereas the amount paid to students of a Doctoral study programme stands at CZK 15,000 per month. The above scholarship amount includes an amount designated for the payment of accommodation costs.Costs of accommodation, food and public transport are covered by scholarship holders from the scholarship under the same conditions that apply to students who are citizens of the CR. Should healthcare exceeding standard care be required by the student, s/he shall cover it at his/her own cost. Travel expenses for travelling to the Czech Republic and back to the student’s home country are paid by the party that nominated the student to study in the CR or by the foreign national at his/her own cost.

Notification: If the application has been accepted and may proceed to the next round of the selection procedure, the Mission shall ask the selected applicants to attend an interview. The most successful applicants shall be asked to submit complete documentation by a given deadline that the Mission shall determine so as to ensure that proposals for scholarships to be granted in a new academic year are at the disposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic (Development Cooperation Department, hereinafter abbreviated as “DCD”) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (International Relations Department, hereinafter abbreviated as “IRD”) in Prague by 31 December of the year prior to the given academic year at the latest.

How to Apply: All applicants shall fill in the electronic application form available on the website stated in Chapter 2 and successfully register (i.e., obtain an application identification number upon sending a completed application form to the pertinent authority electronically). The applicant shall send the completed application form to the Mission in electronic form, i.e., by completing online registration.
