In the 6th century, Naples was conquered by the Byzantines during Emperor Justinian I's quest to restore the Roman Empire.

After his overthrow, Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, was imprisoned in the Castel dell'Ovo fortress in 476.

Naples was founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century BC. e. under the name Parthenope (after the mythological siren). In the 4th century to n. e. The Parthenope was destroyed by the Italians, but soon a new city arose near it, which received the Greek name Neapolis[3]. Later it became part of the Roman Republic, and then - the Roman Empire.

To the east of Naples are Pompeii and Herculaneum - ancient cities on the shores of the Gulf of Naples, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79. Ash buried these cities and preserved them unchanged to this day. Every year, excavations are conducted in this area, which bring new discoveries to archaeologists. At the beginning of November, the excavation sites are available to everyone. All found objects are carefully restored and exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

The city is located in a seismic zone (the historical part is on the western slope of Vesuvius). The last eruption of Vesuvius occurred in 1944. The last catastrophic earthquake happened in Naples in 1980.
