From May 27 to 30, 2026, the International Congress of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) was held in Barcelona, Spain, with live online streaming available. The scientific forum brought together 8,524 delegates from 109 countries worldwide, including 757 participants who attended virtually. The scientific program featured 2,287 abstracts covering all areas of hepatology, practical workshops, expert lectures, and numerous networking opportunities.

The EASL Congress brought together cutting-edge scientific achievements, clinical discussions, translational research, and practical training across the full spectrum of hepatology. Scientific sessions featured some of the most significant research presentations, including new findings on hepatitis B, primary sclerosing cholangitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and hepatocellular carcinoma. Presentations highlighted how advances in therapeutics, disease stratification, and translational research continue to transform clinical practice.

A large proportion of the presentations emphasized the importance of early intervention, precision medicine, and multidisciplinary care. In the field of portal hypertension, discussions focused on non-invasive risk stratification, prevention of decompensation, and optimization of emergency care.

Artificial intelligence and digital innovation were also at the forefront of the congress agenda. Sessions dedicated to generative AI in hepatology explored practical applications ranging from imaging and natural language processing to AI agents and clinical decision-support tools, while also addressing issues of trust, implementation, and future integration into clinical practice.

The scientific program also highlighted progress in the management of liver cancer, portal hypertension, and cirrhosis, including AI-assisted tumor boards, surgical decision-making, vascular liver diseases, and emerging concepts of decompensation and recompensation.

At the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine of Poltava State Medical University, training continues within the educational component “Patient Care. Medical Procedures.”

Theoretical preparation is combined with hands-on skill development; therefore, 2nd-year students of the Faculties of Medicine No. 1 and No. 2 are mastering medical procedures using specialized simulators.

During classes, special attention is paid to two main areas: performing injections and monitoring vital signs. Using mannequin trainers, students practice the techniques of intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intravenous injections, learning to correctly select the technique and adhere to the rules of asepsis and antisepsis.

Training on simulation mannequins allows students to develop practical skills without risk to patients and gradually build professional confidence.

Particular attention is also given to blood pressure measurement skills. Students practice proper cuff placement, pulse determination, and auscultation of Korotkoff sounds. Working with different types of sphygmomanometers and thermometers helps develop precision and clinical attentiveness.

The educational process continues even during air raid alerts, with classes conducted in shelters in accordance with safety requirements.

Practical training on simulation mannequins is an important stage in forming clinical skills and preparing students for work with patients in clinical departments.

Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence in Orthodontics: Educational Session at PSMU

On May 1, 2026, at the Department of Orthodontics of PSMU, Professor Maryna Dmytrenko held an educational session with students of group 4, 3rd year of study, on the topic “Academic and Professional Integrity in the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Orthodontics.”

During the session, the role of artificial intelligence in the modern educational process and its impact on the development of professional competencies of future dental practitioners were discussed in the classroom. Particular attention was given to the fact that in the context of the active use of AI, the concept of “integrity” gains especially practical significance in education.

The discussion emphasized that using artificial intelligence to complete practical assignments without proper analysis does not contribute to the development of clinical reasoning and may deprive students of independent engagement with the learning material. Students explored the possibilities of using AI as “ethical assistance” for structuring information and supporting the learning process, stressing that effective learning implies controlling the tool rather than using it to simulate knowledge.

Special attention was paid to the role of the future physician in ensuring patient safety. It was highlighted that a physician’s integrity requires a critical attitude toward any software-based recommendations and a refusal to use them without appropriate verification. Final verification and clinical decision-making remain the personal responsibility of the specialist.

In conclusion, Professor Maryna Dmytrenko emphasized that only the development of critical thinking and professional maturity enables the responsible integration of artificial intelligence while ensuring the protection of patient confidentiality.

Educational and Practical Activities Held at PSMU on the Occasion of Earth Day

On April 22, 2026, to mark Earth Day, a series of educational and practical activities was organized at the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of PSMU. These events aimed to foster environmental awareness among students under the slogan “Think globally – act responsibly.”

One of the key elements was the presentation of a video featuring first-year students of the Dentistry educational program (group 13), who took part in an environmental clean-up initiative. This activity had not only practical value but also symbolic significance, demonstrating the students’ readiness to actively contribute to solving pressing environmental issues.

At the same time, as part of the academic and educational program, Associate Professor Nataliia Zinchenko delivered a lecture titled “The Future as a Subject of Philosophical Analysis in the Context of Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Development” for first-year students of the Dentistry and Medicine programs.

The events demonstrated a high level of student engagement with environmental issues and their willingness to combine theoretical reflection with practical actions aimed at preserving the planet.

Psychological Relief and Thinking Development: Training for Future Occupational Therapists

On April 15, 2026, a practical psychological training session entitled “From Stereotypes to Critical Analysis” was held for second-year students of the Medical Education and Research Institute enrolled in the Educational and Professional Program “Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy” (first bachelor’s level). The training was aimed at developing cognitive flexibility and providing emotional support for students.

The first part of the event focused on analyzing a case study related to stereotypical and critical thinking. Together with practical psychologist Tetiana Klymach, future rehabilitation specialists explored how biases can influence professional activity and interaction with patients.

Key discussion points included:

how to recognize cognitive filters;
why critical thinking is fundamental for clinical decision-making;
ways to overcome professional stereotypes in the work of an occupational therapist.
The practical part of the training involved the use of an art therapy technique—neurographica. This method enables individuals to work with the subconscious through drawing, transform internal limitations, and relieve psycho-emotional tension. Students mastered the algorithm for releasing constraints, during which they used lines and the rounding of sharp angles on paper to “process” their own stressful situations and form new neural connections oriented toward positive problem-solving.

Participants noted that the combination of analytical work (case study) and creative practice helped them better understand their own reactions and provided an effective tool for self-regulation, which is critically important for their future professional activities.

“30 Steps to a Medical Professional’s Well-Being”: Interactive Event for World Health Day

On the occasion of World Health Day, celebrated annually on April 7, the Department of Public Health, Management and Medical Expertise at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) held an interactive event titled “30 Steps to a Medical Professional’s Well-Being.” The event was attended by third-year students (Group 2) of Medical Faculty No. 2. Its main goal was to transform theoretical knowledge about health into practical daily habits.

A key element of the event was the “Basket of Healthy Habits.” Each student had the opportunity to draw a personalized recommendation for the upcoming month. All 30 ideas were color-coded to represent different aspects of a healthy lifestyle—physical activity, nutrition, and mental health—highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to well-being.

Each selected recommendation became a small step toward a more conscious attitude to personal health, once again emphasizing the importance of cultivating healthy habits on a daily basis among future medical professionals.
