As the first city to join the Swiss Confederation, Lucerne has long held a special place in it, which, along with the city's favorable geographical location, should have made it the capital of Switzerland.

At the end of the 18th century, the city-state was completely ruled by the patricians, consisting of only 29 named families.

Historians assume that Lucerne was founded during the Roman Empire or even earlier. There was already a small settlement in the place where the Roys River flows out of Firwaldstät Lake. The monastery of St. Leodegar named Hof was founded at the beginning of the 8th century, and the first chronicle mentions it in 840.
