The Three Questions is a children’s book written and illustrated by Jon J. Muth. It’s based on a short story by Leo Tolstoy and follows a boy named Nikolai, who wants to understand the three most important things in life. On his journey, he spends time with his animal friends — Sonya the heron, Gogol the monkey, and Pushkin the dog — and finally visits Leo, the wise old turtle.
Through simple acts of helping others, Nikolai discovers the answers he was looking for:
the right time is now,
the most important person is the one who is with you,
and the right thing to do is to do good for the person who is with you now.
Muth’s soft watercolor illustrations, inspired by East Asian art, give the story a peaceful and thoughtful feeling.
