For about half a century, koalas were found only within NSW. In 1855, the naturalist William Blandowski met the ego in the state of Victoria, and in 1923, O. Thomas — in the southeastern part of Queensland [15].

The koala was discovered for science in 1802 by naval officer Barralier, who discovered the remains of a koala among the aborigines and sent the alcoholized limbs of the animal to Philip King, the governor of New South Wales[14]. In June 1803, a live koala was caught south of Sydney, and on August 21, the Sydney Gazette published a detailed description [13]. In 1808, koalas were identified as a species similar to wombats.

The word koala (English koala) comes from the Darak [en] word gulawan or its shortened form gula. The initial transcription of cullawine was gradually superseded by the variant koola. Although the vowel /u/ was originally written as "oo" in English orthography, it was changed to "oa" [2], possibly by mistake. It was mistakenly believed that this word meant "does not drink" [2].
