The maximum known life expectancy is 25 years. They live in shallow waters (from shallow water to 100 meters), almost always kept near the bottom, except for one species - Dasyatis violacea, which lives in the water column, far from the shores. By nature - solitary, except for the breeding season or mass migration, characteristic of some species, but not territorial and not aggressive.

Inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the oceans, a small number of species live in temperate waters. Some species enter freshwater or live in it permanently. In Ukraine they are found in the Black and Azov Seas.
