Yesterday marked the second day of our practical course on “CRISPR-Based Gene Knockout”, and we’re excited to share some of the incredible atmosphere here at the Summer School.
Yesterday’s schedule was packed with activities. We prepared PCR templates for in vitro transcription of crRNAs, ran gels to check products, explored nucleic acid quantification and quality control in an engaging lecture. Then, we cleaned up PCR fragments with AmpliClean magnetic beads. We finished the day with an in-depth look at in vitro transcription, covering everything from practical tips for troubleshooting.
It was a day full of experiments, insightful lectures, troubleshooting sessions, and, most importantly, real molecular biology teamwork!

Yesterday, we officially launched off the practical course “CRISPR-Based Gene Knockout”, an ambitious program held held during the 20th annual International Summer School "Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Biomedicine." For five days from July 7 to 11, 2025 the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Biotechnology at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University has become a vibrant hub of cutting-edge science, hosting this event in close collaboration with the Biotechnology Products Development Department of YP Biotech, the R&D division of ЮРіЯ-ФАРМ / YURiA-PHARM.
This year’s course has brought together 16 participants from Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro: a diverse group of students, PhD researchers, and Assistant Professor, all united by a shared goal: to immerse themselves in a full-scale CRISPR knockout journey, from design to verification.
The School was opened with warm words by Volodymyr Ivanytsia, Doctor of Sciences, Professor, and Vice-Rector of Odesa National University, alongside Oleksandr Hubar, Head of the Biotechnology Products Development Department at YP Biotech. Thanks to the meticulous organization by Nadiia Korotaieva and Tetiana Ivanytsia from ONU, and the expertise brought by the scientific team of Natalia Shenderovska, Roman Sydor, Olha Buhakova, Nazarii Hrubiian, and Nataliia Sehenko, the program has taken on a truly hands-on approach.
Throughout these intensive days, participants dive deep into designing CRISPR experiments, creating guide RNA sequences, performing in vitro transcription, mastering electroporation of mammalian cells, working with genomic DNA, executing in vitro DNA fragment cleavage, and ultimately achieving full-gene deletions in the CHO genome — a eukaryotic system for recombinant protein production.
We’re incredibly proud to see how, despite challenging times, the scientific community not only perseveres but continues to expand opportunities like this. The energy, curiosity, and collaborative spirit of everyone involved prove once again that science knows how to unite and inspire. We can’t wait to share more moments from this scientific adventure — stay tuned!

🌟🔬 Our line-up of distinguished speakers for tomorrow's session at the XIX International Summer School "Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Biomedicine" continues to impress. 🌟🔬
We are delighted to announce that 𝗗𝗿. 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.𝗰𝗼𝗺, will address a critical issue in his talk "𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝗜𝘁".
In his thought-provoking talk, Dr. Schneider makes a bold statement: science is broken. He highlights the alarming trend of new cases of data manipulation and outright research fraud being reported daily, affecting all fields of research, including top journals such as Nature and Science. These problems occur across the board, from small universities to Harvard, and even Nobel laureates are not immune.
Dr. Schneider also brings to light a thriving market for fabricated publications, often from Asian paper mills in China, Iran and Russia, where money is used to buy authorships and citations, and to bribe academic editors. Although thousands of paper mill studies have been retracted, many more remain. The problem is so widespread that even some paper mills have Ukrainian customers and distributors.
The subject of Dr. Schneider's lecture is a pressing matter that requires the attention of all members of the scientific community. With his extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the scientific landscape, Dr. Schneider's insights are sure to spark lively discussion and inspire change in the scientific community.
Make sure to mark your calendars and be there for this unmissable session on this Friday!
