This public lecture will explore the historical roots of Russia’s war against Ukraine — the largest war in Europe since 1945 — examining how the misuse of history, propaganda, and hybrid warfare have shaped the conflict, why it began, and why it has taken the course it has, placing today’s events in a broader historical and global context.

Since its launch in 2022, the Witnessing the War Summer Institute (WWSI) has built an interdisciplinary community where researchers and practitioners have explored the work of ethical and methodologically sound documentation of war testimonies while fostering a global scholarly exchange on the evolving legacy of Russia's war on Ukraine.
