History of French and other languages,
used by French subjects
French is spoken throughout France, although other languages and dialects are also represented in parts of the country, including Basque, Alsatian, Corsican, Breton, Provencal, Catalan, and Flemish.

Romance languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian) are a group of related dialects formed from Latin, which belongs to the Italian branch of the Indo-European language family.

French is spoken by about 98 million people, mainly in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and some African countries. Some Romance languages are of regional rather than national importance. Such adverbs include the Provencal language, which is widespread in the south of France and has 12 million native speakers. In the past, more unified as a literary language, Provençal now has several local dialects.

As evidenced by ancient manuscripts left behind by Roman poets and others of that era, in Republican Rome, the oral form of the language of the lower strata of society underwent changes in pronunciation and grammar so much that it was very different from the written version and from the speech of the privileged classes. During the period of Roman expansion, it was this version of Latin, used by the so-called plebeians, that was spread by soldiers, merchants and settlers in new territories remote from Rome.

However, not all of Europe was influenced by the Romance at the same time. Sicily and Sardinia were colonized in 238 BC, while Dacia - modern Romania - did not come under Roman rule until AD 100. In the new provinces of the Roman Empire, the so-called "vernacular Latin" (Vulgar Latin) underwent further changes under the influence of the local population, who introduced their speech techniques and pronunciation.

The fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century AD separated Rome from the conquered territories, and the distant provinces became even more different from each other, developing their own version of oral Latin. In every region of the former Latin world, the formerly unifying function of the Romance languages has turned into a discordant one.

French and Provencal
Gallo-Roman France was divided into northern and southern parts, accompanied by the invasion of the German-speaking Franks - hence the name "France". Here, the process of dialectization continued into the Middle Ages, resulting in a variety of speech forms, such as Walloon, South French, Provencal languages. The dialect spoken by the inhabitants of Paris acquired the status of national, due to the political significance of the capital, and today it serves as an example of the French language.

Case system
In widely used Romance languages, there has been a tendency to simplify the Latin case system by eliminating differences in the endings of words. For example, the Latin word "porta" (door) had three singular forms: in the nominative, vocative and instrumental cases - porta; in the accusative - portam; and in genitive and dative, portae. Modern Romance languages use only one singular form: French - porte, Italian and Portuguese - porta, Spanish - puerta. Other differences between the Romance languages and Latin are the absence of a neuter, the appearance of a definite article, more frequent use of prepositions, direct word order, and the formation of auxiliary verbs to express temporal characteristics.

Verb forms
In French, the verb forms make it mandatory to use personal pronouns. For comparison: French "je chante" (I sing) and Italian "canto". However, in general, the Latin verb forms remained unchanged.

Phonology notes the disappearance of differences between Latin short and long vowels, the voicing of intervocal voiceless consonants and, in some languages, the disappearance of the final -s in syllables and words. In languages that were particularly prone to the use of stressed sounds (such as Gallo-Romance and Old French), many unstressed vowels disappeared or decreased, and in almost all Romance languages, some stressed vowels were converted to diphthongs. Only in French and Portuguese did the vowel sounds before the nasal consonant undergo nasalization (become nasal). For comparison: French "main" (hand), Portuguese "mao" and Spanish and Italian "mano".

Basque
Basque (Basque or Euskara) is a language spoken by one million people in northern Spain and southwestern France. Although there have been attempts to correlate it with the ancient Iberians, the Hamito-Semitic language group, and the Caucasians, its true origin has remained a mystery.

Basque is similar in sound to Spanish, with its five clear vowels and specific features such as grassed r and palatal n and l. Despite the

Starting to study une langue étrangère ("yun lag etrazher" - a foreign language), beginners often do not know where to start, which method to prefer, etc. Everyone will have their own path to success, and the recommendations below will certainly help in their work ...

Where to begin?
The task of the first stage of learning French is to get acquainted with a foreign language and formulate pronunciation. Due to this:

sign up for courses. This is the simplest and at the same time the most effective advice for beginners. In the first stage of learning an unfamiliar language, you will need someone to correct your mistakes, since the beginner is unable to control himself. It is desirable that le porteur (“le porteur” - in this case “native speaker”) be the teacher for the courses;
study French culture. It is impossible to learn a language apart from the customs and traditions of the country where it is spoken;
do not limit yourself to courses only. Sometimes this may not be enough. Many sites on the Internet offer learning assistance. Find a community dedicated to learning French on your frequently used social network. Thus, you will find yourself in an environment of like-minded people, you will be able to receive les conseils ("le kosei" - advice) on learning the language.
The Kato Lomb experience
The writer and one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world is known primarily as a polyglot who mastered 16 foreign languages, most of which were European. It is noteworthy that Kato taught them without audio courses, Skype and other technical means available today. Among the languages that Lomb mastered were French and Russian, which she secretly learned during the war years. Passion for the Russians was associated with the reading of N. Gogol's novel "Dead Souls". Many will consider this woman a genius, but Kato himself believes that it's all about the right approach. Among the most significant recommendations of the writer are the following:

study words in context. No need to waste time memorizing vocabulary words. You can memorize a lexical unit. However, you need to know its compatibility with other words. Learn unfamiliar vocabulary at the level of subject text;
exercise regularly. Devote at least 10 minutes a day to work. If classes are held only a few times a month, you will not achieve the desired result;
you need to mentally traduire ("traduir" - translate) everything that you see or hear. This advice is useful for those who have moved to the intermediate stage and have at least a small vocabulary and basic communication skills. Translate dialogues heard on the street, advertising slogans, small notes in newspapers, etc .;
memorize new information in the first person. For example, instead of memorizing avoir peur (a'voir peur - to be afraid), memorize the phrase J`ai peur des chiens (zhe per de shie - I'm afraid of dogs).
More experienced
As you move into intermediate or advanced stages, complicate the tasks:

watch undubbed films, read literature or the press in the original. Many of those who study French postpone these actions "until better times" because they believe that they have not mastered a foreign language well enough. It is quite natural to not understand the meaning of some or even a large number of words when reading or viewing them in the original. A newborn child does not understand anything that is said to him. However, understanding comes precisely because the child hears and repeats unfamiliar words and expressions constantly;
communicate with native speakers. You can chat with a native French speaker anywhere in the world. To improve le français ("le fra`sa" - French), find friends from several French-speaking countries: France itself, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada, etc. Despite the fact that the inhabitants of all these countries speak the same the same language, the speech of each of them will have their own characteristics;
organize le voyage ("le voy`yazh" - travel) to the country of the target language. Such a trip can be a great motivation for learning. Knowing that you have to visit, for example, France, you will learn the language and culture even more intensively. With the skills to communicate in French, you won't need to ask a guide or translator for help. You can independently book a hotel room, find the attraction you are interested in, having received information from a passer-by on the street, order a dish in a restaurant.
If you have studied other Romance languages before French, you are in luck - you have the opportunity to learn the language by analogy. However, if you have not studied foreign languages before, you are even more fortunate - new discoveries and positive impressions await you ahead.
