Between the ridges lies the low, gently sloping plain of Mesaoria, irrigated during the rains by temporary streams of the Akaki River in the west and the Pedieos River in the east. The plain of Mesaori is composed of marine sediments, mostly of the Quaternary period. Protected by the mountains from the winds, this plain has a favorable climate and is the breadbasket of Cyprus. Wheat and barley fields alternate here with olive, mulberry and orange groves, and in the foothills they are replaced by vineyards.

Its width in the western part is 15 km, to the east it expands to 25-30 km. The western part of the Kyrenia ridge is higher; individual peaks exceed 1 thousand m. The highest point of the ridge is Mount Akromanda (1023 m). The southwestern half of the island is occupied by a wide Troodos mountain range, cut by longitudinal river valleys. Officially, the territory of the Republic of Cyprus includes 98% of the island of the same name (the remaining 2.7% is occupied by the British military bases Akrotiri and Dhekelia), as well as the nearby islands of Agios Georgios, Geronisos, Glukiotissa, Kila, Quedes, Cordilia and Mazaki. De facto, after the events of 1974, the island was divided into four parts: 57.6% of the island is controlled by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus (populated mainly by ethnic Greeks), 36% - the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (populated mainly by ethnic Turks), 3.7% - UN, 2.7% - by the British Armed Forces. The TRNC is recognized as an independent state only by Turkey.
