Time Based: Sonic Interventions — between Kyiv and Glasgow

In 2024, curator and producer Olya Bekenshtein (Am I Jazz?, Closer) launched Time Based, a platform that explores artistic practices where sound becomes the primary medium.

This year, in partnership with UK-based organization Arts & Parts and creative producer Martel Ollerenshaw, Time Based presented Time Based: Sonic Interventions in Glasgow.

As Ukraine fights for its right to exist, cultural presence is as crucial as security. The festival of experimental music, sound art, and cross-cultural collaboration united Ukrainian and British artists around the theme of sounds beyond human control — from everyday noise to the sonic realities of war.

The event opened a new space for dialogue between Ukraine and the UK, asserting Ukraine’s cultural voice on the global stage. Five new Ukrainian–British works were created especially for the festival, designed to be shared in other contexts.

Українська композиторка та саунд-артистка Анна Хвиль у співпраці з драматургом Пйотром Армяновським створили звукову прогулянку, до якої можна приєднатися та стати частиною спільної синхронізованої звукової події.

Ukrainian composer and sound artist Anna Khvyl, in collaboration with dramaturg Piotr Armianovski, created a soundwalk, where participants in Glasgow, Kyiv and around the world can engage in a shared, synchronised sonic happening.

Лабіринт споглядань — це кінетична звукова інсталяція, створена спільно, як результат тривалих діалогів про циклічність повернення, властиву відмінність між повторенням і поверненням, ангелів Пауля Клее, руйнівні процеси історії та присутність кіл — як метафоричних, так і буквальних — у практиках кожного з учасників. “Лабіринт споглядань” обертається, подібно до місячного тіла, що холодно засвідчує події під час свого руху, впливає на них без втручання, — неконтрольовано породжуючи сліпі зони та перешкоди.

We are excited to announce our collaboration with Brooklyn-based pioneering nonprofit performance center Issue Project Room.

Throughout May 2025 we will co-present three commissioned works uniting artists based in Kyiv and New York City. Working through the simultaneity of war and multiple crises, these three pairs engage in a collaborative creation that highlights physical distance - yet reveals a deeply layered interdependence.
