On August 23, 2004, Ukraine celebrated one of its most important national holidays for the first time — National Flag Day. In honor of this holiday, we have prepared some interesting facts about the national flag of Ukraine for you:

🔸️The oldest Ukrainian flags were triangular in shape.

🔸️In the 18th century, the Cossack flags of the Zaporizhzhya Army were often made of blue cloth with a knight in gold or red robes, with gold ornamentation and fittings.

🔸️On March 22, 1918, the Central Council, headed by Hrushevsky, passed the Law on the State Flag of the Republic, approving the yellow and blue flag as the symbol of the Ukrainian People's Republic. On November 13, 1918, the blue and yellow flag became the state symbol of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. It was approved in Subcarpathian Rus, and in 1939 in Carpathian Ukraine.

🔸️The official shades of the Ukrainian flag according to Pantone are Pantone Coated 2935 C and Pantone Coated Yellow 012 C.

🔸️The largest flag of Ukraine, measuring 30 by 45 meters (1,350 m²), is listed in the Ukrainian Book of Records. It was first created in Donetsk in 2007, then the record-breaking flag was unfurled in Bakhmut (also in the Donetsk region) — its area was already 2400 m². And the longest flag was made in Ternopil. In 2010, a banner 9.5 km long and 0.75 m wide was unfurled there. This length was enough to surround the entire Ternopil pond.

🔸️In 2016, Ukrainian climbers planted a flag on the summit of the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salado (6,872 meters), and that same year, Iryna Halay became the first Ukrainian woman to climb Mount Everest, the Roof of the World. She carried the blue and yellow flag with her.

💙💛The flag is not only an official symbol, it is a sacred thing for every citizen of Ukraine. Respect the national flag, respect your country.

International Students Office congratulates you on Day of the National Flag of Ukraine!

The greatest reward for our work is the feedback we receive from our students!

Here's a review from Anshika 🇮🇳 (India):

«Hello! My name is Anshika.

If you’d like to find out what it’s like for an international student to study at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, then this video is just for you.

When I first arrived in Kyiv, I was very nervous, as everything was new to me: a new country, a new culture and, most importantly, a new language. Finding the right product in a supermarket or simply chatting to people without Google Translate was a real challenge.

But that’s when the preparatory department for international students really helped me. It became a sort of bridge that helped me adapt to life and study in Ukraine.

At first, the rules of Ukrainian grammar seemed like a real secret code to me. However, the teachers here are very attentive, caring, professional and creative. They helped me understand the grammar step by step until it all made sense to me».
