Davydova N. Artbook «I am here, we are here, my rest is here». 2026
The artbook is created as a combination of photography, transparent materials, text and experimental work with the form of the page. It is based on the experience of being in a shelter during air raids and an attempt to create a different, inner space for myself through memory. At night, when I am in the subway, I close my eyes and imagine myself among nature. This image becomes a kind of psychological shelter, which allows me to briefly distance myself from anxiety and return to a sense of rest.
The photographs of nature in the artbook are contrasted with images of the real space of the shelter and the everyday life of people around. The translucent pages create the effect of superimposing these two realities: nature does not exist separately from the present moment, but constantly appears through it as a memory or an imaginary image. They work as a kind of veil that conveys the process of perception: reality remains present, but consciousness tries to replace it with a calmer image.
The holes in the pages become a separate element of interaction with memory. Through them, fragments of other photographs, texts and details of the following or previous pages open. They resemble the flickering of memories that arise intermittently and are not fully controlled. At the same time, reality is constantly peeking through these holes, from which it is impossible to completely isolate oneself. Therefore, each viewing of the artbook becomes a process of moving between two states – imaginary rest and physical presence in the space of danger.
The text plays an important role in the work. A poem written specifically for this artbook runs through its pages as an internal monologue. It not only complements the photographic images, but also conveys the personal state of a person trying to find rest in a situation of constant uncertainty. The combination of text, photography and the materiality of the pages allows us to convey not a specific event, but a subjective sense of time, space and anxiety.
This artbook is a study of memory as a method of psychological protection. The physical shelter in the subway becomes a parallel to the inner shelter that a person creates in their own mind. Nature in the work appears not simply as a landscape, but as a space of rest to which one can mentally return. Through a combination of transparency, openings, photography and text, the book invites the viewer to travel this path with the author – from disturbing reality to memory, from presence to imagination and back again.
