Atacame Desert, South America
On a route made famous by revolutionary Che Guevara who kicked off his motorcycle journey in Buenos Aires, head down to Chile through the Atacama Desert into the Peruvian Amazon and up to Venezuela. Vast expanses of sandy flats quickly roll into high tops of dunes and gorges leading to plateaus of dusty grass. It’s a trip for explorers, with the Andes standing tall above the Argentine–Chile border, blurring one side into the other. NASA even uses the desert as a testing ground for future Mars missions.

Lovina Beach: Indonesia
This quiet stretch of black and gray volcanic sand sits on the north coast of Bali, just a short distance south of Singaraja, the capital city of the Buleleng regency. A highlight of this laid-back beach destination is visiting Kalibukbuk, one of the coastal villages along Lovina Beach, and the Kalibukbuk Buddhist temple on the beach. There is also an abundance of incredible marine and underwater life, so snorkeling and diving are popular pastimes, but the main draw for beachgoers is spotting the playful bottle-nosed dolphins. Reserve accommodations for an extended escape at The Lovina Bali, a beachfront resort in Kalibukbuk.

Salar de Uyuni
The dried Uyuni salt flat is located in Bolivia, in the Andes, at an altitude of 3,650 m above sea level. The salt lake has no equal in the world, with an area of 10,582 km². It is now used not only for salt extraction but also as the main transportation route on the Altiplano plateau. It is one of the most beautiful and unusual places in Bolivia. The flat surface glistens dazzlingly in the sun, and from November to March, when the rainy season arrives, a thin layer of water covers it. And this is the best time to visit here. The flawless smoothness of the Uyuni creates an exact replica of the sky, making the horizon get lost in countless reflections. When traveling through the vast expanse of salt marsh, the Fisherman's Island (Isla de Pescadores) with its giant and unimaginably ancient cacti is a must-see. And the Stone Forest (Valle De Rocas), a bizarre natural installation made of clumps reminding of Salvador Dali's works, is also worth seeing.
