Оперативне повідомлення про результати вимірювання концентрації цезію у повітрі в м.Києві 09/04/2020

According to the forecasted path of potentially contaminated atmospheric air caused by the fires continuing in natural ecosystems of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, a temporary local increase in the Cs-137 concentration in the surface air in the northwestern part of Kyiv was expected to occur from 13:00 to 15:00 on 8 April 2020 and was previously estimated at 1.0-2.0 mBq/m3 (averaged over the peak). The increase in Cs-137 concentration was caused by the path of air masses moving over the Kyiv region, considering the changing wind direction.

Yesterday, on 8 April from 12:25 to 16:35, SSTC NRS experts took an air sample using the onboard sampler of the radiation reconnaissance vehicle (mobile radiological laboratory) on V. Stusa Street that, as was forecasted, was on the path of air masses with combustion products.

The South Ukraine NPP completed trial operation of the Westinghouse fuel and received an authorization for its commercial operation at Unit 3. The authorizing document has been signed by the SNRIU today, 28 December.
SUNPP Unit 3 became the first power unit in the country that started commercial operation of the Westinghouse fuel. The Westinghouse fuel has been in safe operation already at six Ukrainian NPP units.
We sincerely congratulate our colleagues from the SUNPP, Energoatom Directorate, SNRIU, US partners, and all those involved in the difficult but successful fuel diversification process and a significant step toward the nation's energy independence!

Important Information on Increased Radiation Background in Central Geophysical Observatory Building 29/10/2019

Important Information on Increased Radiation Background in Central Geophysical Observatory Building

On Monday, 28 October, increased radiation background was observed in one of the Central Geophysical Observatory buildings located at 39 Nauka Avenue.

In this regard, we inform that the increased radiation background has nothing to do with operation of the nuclear research reactor located at the Nuclear Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and any information about this is false.

Data on the increased level of radiation were obtained during radiation survey in the building of the physicochemical laboratory of the Central Geophysical Observatory. According to preliminary data, radiation comes from a radiation source located in the building built in 1987.

The level of radiation in the room where the source has been detected is 500 to 600 μSv/h and in the premise adjacent to this room is 100 to 170 μSv/h. The allowed value according to the control levels established by the Health and Epidemiological Service of Kyiv is 0.24 µSv and up to 0.44 µSv for buildings commissioned before 1992 where people can stay.

The experts who surveyed the surrounding territories detected another radiation source. According to preliminary data, its radiation level is 480 µSv/hour.

There is no threat to the environment.

Experts of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety currently continue working on the site. We will additionally inform about the survey results.

Cabinet of Ministers Resumed SNRIU Independence 24/10/2019

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), Western partners and the public have managed to reach agreements according to which the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine returned independence to the Ukrainian regulatory body. The relevant resolution “Some Issues of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection in Ukraine” has been adopted today at the meeting of the Government.

We express our gratitude to all who care about the fate of our country in the field of nuclear energy use and those who showed their civil position in this difficult situation.

It should be noted that Cabinet Resolution No. 879 adopted on 20 October 2019 subordinated SNRIU to the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine, which contradicts the main international documents on nuclear and radiation safety, such as the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention of the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.

SSTC NRS Statement on Situation with SNRIU Subordination to Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection 24/10/2019

Information on the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to subordinate the SNRIU to the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine (Cabinet Resolution No. 879 dated 20 October 2019) has been widely disseminated. This happened because it is impossible not to address the issues of nuclear and radiation safety in the country that once experienced the largest man-made accident in the human history.

Now we are waiting for the official response of international financial institutions, embassies and state agencies of the partner countries on the situation with the nuclear regulatory body in Ukraine.

We believe that the Cabinet's decision to resubordinate the Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate is an unfortunate mistake and the Government will take appropriate measures and steps to resume SNRIU independence.
