Advantages: Intrinsic motivation can be long-lasting and self-sustaining. Efforts to build this kind of motivation are also typically efforts at promoting student learning. Such efforts often focus on the subject rather than rewards or punishments.

Disadvantages: Efforts at fostering intrinsic motivation can be slow to affect behavior and can require special and lengthy preparation. Students are individuals, so a variety of approaches may be needed to motivate different students. It is often helpful to know what interests one's students in order to connect these interests with the subject matter. This requires getting to know one's students. Also, it helps if the instructor is interested in the subject.☺☺☺

Motivation concepts

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external pressure. Intrinsic motivation has been studied by social and educational psychologists since the early 1970s. Research has found that it is usually associated with high educational achievement and enjoyment by students. Explanations of intrinsic motivation have been given in the context of Fritz Heider's attribution theory, Bandura's work on self-efficacy, and Deci and Ryan's cognitive evaluation theory (see self-determination theory). Students are likely to be intrinsically motivated if they:
attribute their educational results to internal factors that they can control (e.g. the amount of effort they put in),
believe they can be effective agents in reaching desired goals (i.e. the results are not determined by luck),
are interested in mastering a topic, rather than just rote-learning to achieve good grades.

Positive incentives generally have an optimistic attitude behind and they are generally given to satisfy the psychological requirements of employees. For example-promotion, praise, recognition, perks and allowances, etc. It is positive by nature.

Negative Incentives

Negative incentive is generally resorted to when positive incentive does not works and a psychological set back has to be given to employees. It is negative by nature. Motivation vs. Emotion
While motivation and emotion can be intricately linked, they are two fundamentally different things. Motivation describes the wants or needs that direct behavior toward a goal; in contrast, an emotion is a subjective state of being that we often describe as a feeling. Emotion and motivation are linked in several ways: both influence behavior and can lead us to take action, and emotion itself can act as a motivator. For example, the emotion of fear can motivate a person to leave a stressful situation, while the emotion of happiness can motivate a person to be more productive on a project that reinforces that emotion.😁😁😁

Incentive is an act or promise for greater action. It is also called as a stimulus to greater action. Incentives are something which are given in addition to wagers. It means additional remuneration or benefit to an employee in recognition of achievement or better work. Incentives provide a spur or zeal in the employees for better performance. It is a natural thing that nobody acts without a purpose behind. Therefore, a hope for a reward is a powerful incentive to motivate employees. Besides monetary incentive, there are some other stimuli which can drive a person to better. This will include job satisfaction, job security, job promotion, and pride for accomplishment. Therefore, incentives really can sometimes work to accomplish the goals of a concern. The need of incentives can be many:-

To increase productivity,
To drive or arouse a stimulus work,
To enhance commitment in work performance,
To psychologically satisfy a person which leads to job satisfaction,
To shape the behavior or outlook of subordinate towards work,
To inculcate zeal and enthusiasm towards work,
To get the maximum of their capabilities so that they are exploited and utilized maximally.😁😁😁

Motivation describes the wants or needs that direct behavior toward a goal. It is an urge to behave or act in a way that will satisfy certain conditions, such as wishes, desires, or goals. Older theories of motivation stated that rational thought and reason were the guiding factors in human motivation; however, psychologists now believe that motivation may be rooted in basic impulses to optimize well-being, minimize physical pain, and maximize pleasure.

What to do if there is no motivation
Think carefully about your goals so you can focus on the things that really matter to you. Visualize.
Break a big task into small chunks - so each step you take will energize you to work on.
Work through the moments in which you feel insecure.
Reward yourself for small wins.
Many are helped by "decluttering". Free your life from unfinished business and abandoned projects, abandon imposed goals, get rid of the clutter of your home. Analyze your environment: there may be toxic people around you. Do not regret parting with such.

Seek motivation from people: communicate with energetic and inspired - and then you can adopt their passion. Or get motivated by success stories: there are many blogs, books and films that encourage you to change something in your life.😇😇😇

Why strong motivation is worse than mediocre
In psychology, there is the Yerkes-Dodson law, which explains why the average intensity of motivation gives the best results.

At the beginning of the 20th century, scientists conducted an experiment: they taught mice to go through a maze, acting on them with a current. It turned out that the animals coped with the task most quickly when the intensity of the electric shocks was average.

Then the scientists tested their theory on people: they offered a focus group to complete the task for money. And the more the amount became, the better the participants coped with the task. But at one point, when the reward was already large enough, people began to worry - and the fear of “losing” prevented them.

Biological theories of motivation
The instinctive theory assumes that a person is motivated by instincts - innate patterns of behavior. Basically, these are instincts that are important for the survival of the body (fear, anger, hunger) and the satisfaction of physiological needs.

Arousal theory suggests that people act to decrease or increase arousal. Everyone has their own optimal level of arousal, and everyone strives to regulate their condition.

For example, when the level of arousal is insufficient, the person wants to watch an action movie. And when he is too tall, he will look for ways to relax.

What Science Says About Motivation
Our needs involve the central nervous system. When the body lacks something, the blood composition changes. After that, it generates nerve signals that reach the hypothalamus, and from there into the cerebral cortex.

It is here that motivational excitement becomes an energy booster that charges a person to take action to fill a need. Therefore, we wake up in the middle of the night to have a snack, or find the strength to do yoga in the morning.

There are three main components to motivation: activation, persistence, and intensity.

Activation is an internal decision, initiative: to do, start, try.

Persistence is the pursuit of a goal even in the presence of obstacles.

Intensity is the concentration on the idea and the energy with which a person tries to achieve a goal.

The extent of each of these components can affect whether you achieve your goal or not. For example, strong activation means that you are more likely to start bringing the idea to life. Perseverance and intensity determine whether you will work on it, even if the result does not come immediately.😁😁😁

The motive for self-affirmation is the desire to assert itself in society, to gain a certain status, respect. Sometimes such a desire is attributed to the motivation of prestige (the desire to achieve and maintain a higher status).
The motive for identification is the desire to resemble someone (authority, idol, father, etc.).
The motive of power is the desire of a person to influence others, to lead them, to direct their actions.
Procedural and substantive motives - an incentive to action through not external factors, but by the process and content of the activity.
External motives - factors that induce action are outside of activity (prestige, material wealth, etc.).
The motive for self-development is striving for personal growth, realizing one's potential.
The motive for achievement is the desire to achieve the best results and master the skill in something.
Prosocial motives (socially significant) - motives that are associated with a sense of duty, responsibility to people.
The motive of affiliation (joining) is the desire to establish and maintain contact with other people, to contact and pleasant communication with them.
Any kind of motivation plays a very important role in the study of human psychology and behavior. But what affects a person's motivation? What are the factors? It is to study these issues that motivation theories are applied.
