The boundary between these species runs approximately across Siberia, the main boundary is the Yenisei River. American moose are very variable in size, the largest of them with the most powerful horns belong to the Alaskan subspecies A. a. gigas and to the East Siberian A. a. pfizenmayeri; the smallest elk with deer-like antlers belongs to the Ussuri subspecies of A. a. cameloides.

For a long time, moose were considered a monotypic genus, but since 1999, after research by G. Boeskorov (1999), the genus is considered to consist of two species that differ in size, shape of horns, number of chromosomes. Since then, 6-7 subspecies, previously divided into two major geographical groups, are considered as separate species (Mammal Species of the World, 2005):

Moose are common in the forest zone of the Northern Hemisphere, less often in the forest-steppe and on the outskirts of the steppe zone. In Europe it is found in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Belarus, northern Ukraine, Scandinavia and Central Russia; in Asia, from northern Mongolia and northeastern China to the northern part of the Siberian taiga. In North America it is found in Alaska, Canada and the northeastern United States, reaching the state of Colorado.

Males have huge (the largest in modern mammals) horns, often spatulate in shape (especially pronounced spatula in Yakut and American moose); their scope reaches 180 cm, weight - 20-30 kg. Moose shed their antlers annually in November-December and walk without them until April-May. Females are hornless. Moose horns are a well-known hunting trophy, which are the object of hunting collecting and which are put up for hunting trophy competitions.

Male body length up to 3 m, neck height up to 2.3 m, tail length 12-13 cm; weight 360-600 kg, females smaller than males. In appearance, the elk is noticeable from other deer.
